Amy Butler “Piece Keeping” Blog Tour

Amy-Butler-Pyramid-Pillow

Welcome to the Amy Butler Piece Keeping blog tour! Hip hip hooray!

I’m elated to be involved in this tour for two main reasons:

  1. Amy was my first fabric crush. When I started quilting at age 15, I almost exclusively used her prints. Seeing her fabric on the bolt reminded me of the first time I went school supplies shopping and beheld a Lisa Frank binder. It was bright. It was bold. It was hot colors. Oh my it was perfect! Frankly speaking, Amy Butler fabric was my gateway drug into quilting. Would I go so far as to say she laid the foundation for all of my quilting endeavors thus far? Probably! (You can read more about my thoughts on her beautiful fabric here.)
  2. I saw a picture on Instagram of Amy Butler’s booth at Spring Quilt Market. In the background were two stunning pyramid pillows. Quilted sculptures? What was this?! Sitting on the couch, staring at my phone, I had a time-warp moment. You know what I’m talking about? It’s when the whole world gets really big and you can see into the future and the future is full of a pile of pyramid pillows and you’re dancing and laughing and throwing them around and eating cookies and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is playing in the background, then woosh! You’re snapped back to reality, but life has completely changed because you saw into the future and the future was going to be great! And MY future was going to have those pillows.

I couldn’t believe my luck when Chronicle Books reached out to me to be on this tour. I think around 9:00am I got an email asking which project I wanted to make, and by 9:03am I had responded with two words: PYRAMID PILLOWS

Hopefully I had a little more tact than that, but probably not. I’m sure I quickly wrote a follow up email with something like, “Sorry for the all caps. It wasn’t my intention to mean yell at you, just excited yell at you. What I meant was, I would like to make the pyramid pillows, please. And by please, I mean, I WILL make those pillows. Don’t tell me no.”

My Pillow Process

As a quick preface, I'm not a craft sewer. I am pretty strictly a quilter and that's it. I've made a few simple pillow covers, but nothing more. This is not false modesty. I don't particularly harness that skill either. For me, quilting = love. All other sewing = confusion, doubt, shame spiral, ice cream.

Trending patterns!

However, I picked this pyramid pillow pattern with the full confidence of a ten year pillow-making vet. With the amount of shear certainty I possessed for the future success of this pillow, you'd think I'd done something like this before. So, when I cracked open Amy's book, and saw all of the templates I needed, I had my first small doubt.

Quilting-Templates

Once I cut them out, however, sewing them together was back in my patchwork wheelhouse. Confidence, restored! After making two of these pillows, I learned a few lessons that might be helpful:

  • Don’t lose a template. Each pillow has 15 unique paper templates. Protect them with your life.
  • Fold your fabric in half so that when you cut a template, you get two for the price of one. This works well for this pattern because for most of the templates you need 3 of the template and 3 of a reverse of the template.
  • Line up the base of the triangle template with the grain of the fabric – that way at least one side of each triangle is not cut on the bias.
  • Post-It notes can be very helpful in keeping your cut fabric organized.
  • The pattern tells you to iron seams open. Rather than mumbling to yourself, “yes, yes, but I always iron seams to the side so I’m going to ignore these instructions and do ma thang.” Iron seams open.
  • Yes, you can overstuff a pillow. Too much stuffing and these structural beauties lose their structure.
Amy-Butler-pattern

This pillow is geared toward a moderate to advanced skill level. Cutting out so many templates can be daunting, but the end result is well worth the time!

It’s One of the most fulfilling experiences- and I hope to pass it on to the next generation.

  21. Lauren says:

My sewing goal for 2016 is (shh, it’s a surprise) to make a quilt for my husband for our anniversary. Or, well, at least to start making it. But I’m scared to take on something so daunting and scared it won’t turn out. So I guess my other goal is to stop letting fear stop me.

    • Suzy says:

Hear, hear! I recently heard a great quote by Elizabeth Gilbert – “You can’t be creative without being vulnerable and you can’t be vulnerable without experiencing fear.” The creativity is in us and so is the fear. They both come along on the journey and the hard part is not letting fear determine the directions we take. I preach this to myself ERRY DAY! haha. Good luck with your goals!

  22. Genevieve says:

So many goals…crafty and crochet-y and quilty- including the lion quilt by Violet Craft, another Surprise quilt, a log cabin quilt and designing something with the idea of a New York beauty block ????

I’ve already designed the quilt pattern but still need inspiration from a perfect fabric collection. Working with Amy Butler fabrics would be DREAMY!

  27. Amanda says:

Amy Butler fabrics got me excited about sewing as well! I drove all the way across town to the only fabric store that carried her line to buy fabric for a huge tote.

  34. HG Miramontez says:

Hi thanks for the give away. I plan to learn free motion. And I need to quilt for my kids and eventually someday something for me.

  35. Kate says:

Oh my, I have so many goals. I have this delicious Aunt Grace hexi quilt kit that I bought when I found out I was having a baby girl, and I’ve been too intimidated to start it. I’m bad with learning the rules before I start a project, and always end up winging it (and regretting it). So I want to learn how to do it the right way, and get that puppy made so I can ogle it all I want ❤️ Ps. I feel like Amy has seduced many a quilter with her fabulous patterns. I get excited when I see some of her stuff out in the real world. ????

I love these! Are these the ones where on Instagram you said I you were an interior designer you would focus solely on blues and cream? I think so. Anyways. I also agree with your sentiment about amy butler- Lisa frank connection.

Anyway. I actually have two goals in mind:
    1) finish the queen sized quilt I’m making- scrappy strip quilt in earth tones. It’s big and daunting
    2) finish the baby’s quilt- I’ve got it all pieced and backed and quilted, but I’m terrified of binding.

  62. Pattie C says:

Those pyramids are pretty awesome but I don’t know how you would use them as a pillow. I can see a cat attacking it on a regular basis if it was in my house. My goal for this year is to finish a feather quilt I started in March and lost interest in when I saw a shiny spider quilt on instagram. Beyond that I need to really do a clean and purge to my studio.

  76. Christy Johnson says:

Beautiful pyramid pillows! I love them. I, like you, haven’t attempted sewing anything other but quilts, so I can relate! I’d like to try some pillows and bags though. Love your pillows!!

2016, my goal will be to sew bags, at least one for every beautiful embroidery block that our friend Joyce has stitched, at last count there were 7 finished, and another almost done, the blocks will be an outside pocket, and are done on wither calico or white, so I need to carefully choose the bag fabric to compliment them. This giveaway, another very generous sponsor. Greetings from Jean in New Zealand

  146. Beth T. says:

A goal I’ve had for 2016 is to quilt more for others outside of the circle of my friends and family. In keeping with that, I am making a quilt for the Pulse families, am making blocks for the families of the officers in Dallas, and have done some other charity quilting. All of this has been very fulfilling, and even though I haven’t completed as many family quilts, I feel good about what I *have* done.

  158. Erin Monfort-Nelson says:

I have so many sewing goals for this year! But here are two that are Amy Butler related! First I have a nearly finished Swoon quilt made entirely from Amy Butler’s Lark fabric line which I had hoarded for years before cutting into it for the swoon, so I am planning to finish that beautiful quilt this year. (Seriously the blocks are done its just sashing them together and piecing a backing, I can do that right?) The second goal is to return to a pile of HST made from Amy Butler fabric from an even longer time ago! I dont mind sewing HST but I HATE trimming them, so this project has been sneering at me from the corner for a long while but I would love to finish it up! Then maybe I will buy more Amy Butler fabric and the new book as a reward!

  159. Linda W says:

Love your pyramid pillows. My goal is to complete all my quilting projects already in progress. One quilt is completely done, one needs binding and two more need to be quilted and bonded. Maybe add another one to the list. Thanks for the chance, would love the fabric and book.
