One of the most frequently asked questions we get is about choosing fabric for quilts. We get it — selecting fabrics can be tricky! What if you like how the fabrics look in a bundle but then you don't like how they look in a quilt block? All that time and money are down the drain. That's why we're excited to share fabric-picking tips and inspiration for baby quilt patterns!
In each post of this series, you'll see photos and mockups of our quilt patterns. If the fabric is still available we will include the list of the fabrics used so you'll have your shopping list all ready. Keep reading to find your favorite baby quilt patterns!

The Suzy Quilts Fabric Inspiration Series
Over the course of five blog posts, the SQ team will guide you through some of our most beloved patterns in different color variations including lists of the real fabric colors used in each mockup.
Trending patterns!
The mockups are all brought to you by Sarah Holst of the shop Sarah Made, who has made kits for some of the mockups that will be available for a limited time, and from Suzy herself. Some of the mockups below by Suzy were previously only available in Suzy Quilts patterns and are being shown on our website for the first time!
The series will be five posts long and cover each common quilt size:
- Baby Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Throw Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Twin Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Queen Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- King Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
Note that fabric requirements for all of our patterns, including the baby quilt patterns listed in this post, can be found on that pattern's page in our shop. Just click on the pattern you want and scroll down — you'll see the fabric requirements as well as every blog post related to that pattern!
If a kit is available for a mockup shown in the post, it will be linked in the bullet points above the mockup image. If no kit is available, there will be no kit listing.

How To Select Your Own Fabric Colors
If you're an adventurous quilter who is interested in creating your very own color mockups, we have some great suggestions!
- Color Cards: Buying a color card from your favorite fabric manufacturer gives you a small swatch of each fabric so you can see the colors even more truly than they appear on a computer screen. You can use those swatches to select a quilt made entirely out of solids or even match up prints with coordinating solids. Plus don't miss our free tutorial for how to turn a color card into magnets to make color selection even easier!
- PreQuilt: Have you heard of this fantastic web-based app? PreQuilt uses colors from real fabric companies, including prints, so you can create your own mockups and see exactly how your will look when finished. We have exclusively partnered with PreQuilt and each pattern in our catalog is available as a digital coloring page, as are all of Suzy's print and solid fabric collection. Check out our PreQuilt blog post for video tutorials about how to make your own digital quilt mockups.
- Coloring Pages: Speaking of coloring pages, each Suzy Quilts pattern comes with a blank coloring page that can be printed and colored in by hand. You can even download most of our coloring pages without buying the patterns in this blog post!
- Sew Along Blog Posts: Did you know that the first week of every Suzy Quilts sew along focuses on selecting fabric for your quilt? Even if you've missed a sew along, you can still see all of the posts, including the Week 1 posts about fabric selection, by heading to the Sew Along section of our website.
- Local Quilt Shops: The staff of your local quilt shop would love to help you select fabrics for a quilt! Bring them an inspiration image or even just an idea, along with a picture of the pattern and the fabric requirements, and pretty soon you'll have your own quilt kit made with your new pals at the quilt shop 🙂
- Suzy's Ultimate Guide to Picking Fabric For a Quilt: Subscribers to The Cutting Table can read a two-part series of articles by Suzy that takes a deeper dive into the creative process and color theory as it relates to fabric and quilts. About Baby Quilt Patterns
Most quilters are inspired to make their first quilt because of a new baby. Maybe it's your own baby, or a gift for a friend or family member's baby shower, or you could be a new grandparent. Maybe you have a new blended family and want to celebrate all the special kids in your life, or you got word that a child is waiting for you to adopt them. However that sweet baby is coming, you feel drawn towards quiltmaking.
And that's what we love about baby quilt patterns. The motivation for making them is always so full of love, care, and excitement. Spending hours or even weeks sewing is all worth it to see any baby playing on a quilt or quietly napping under your creation.
Baby quilts are also the fastest quilts to make since they are small! They can also be very affordable creations that require less fabric. But the tender act of creating something beautiful for a baby is one of the purest motivators for making any quilt.
When deciding to make a baby quilt, you can choose either a small baby quilt or a crib quilt that could grow with the baby. According to our Ultimate Guide to Quilt Sizes, a standard baby quilt is 30" x 40" and a standard crib quilt is 36" x 52". Your quilt does not have to match these dimensions exactly, but to be sized for a baby, whatever you make will be around these two size options.
