Denver Fabric: A Weekend Guide for Classin’ It Up, A Mile High

Denver-Fabric-City-Guide

Come, my fellow quilters, let's visit Denver fabric shops, food and fun! This city is walkable. It’s beautiful. It really actually is exactly one mile high. Denver is home to yes, some really crazy conspiracy theories (just Google some info on the airport…) but also some amazing food, fabric, and if that wasn’t enough, it also has 300 days of sunshine a year.

Get your your sunglasses and let’s hit the streets of one of the most active, educated places in the country.

I think most of these educated people majored in “How To Cook Amazing Food,” (I’m sure that’s a PhD program somewhere…) because it was seriously hard to narrow down Denver’s incredible foodie scene to three recommendations.

Where to Eat in Denver

Rosenbergs Bagels

Rosenberg’s Bagels & Delicatessen

Everyone loves a good deli, but Rosenberg’s isn’t just a good deli. It’s a craaaazy good deli. Rosenberg’s doesn’t only make their own bagels, but also has house-made lox, pastrami, and rugelah to go along with them. You haven’t been to a Jewish deli until you’ve been to Rosenberg’s. (Hint: they have a sandwich called “The Don’t Tell Ya Mother” that you should definitely tell your mother about.)

Avanti Food & Beverage: A Collective Eatery

No matter your age, gender, nationality, whatever, I know you have lived through this scenario because you are a human: It's 6:00pm, your stomach starts to growl. You turn to your BFF Brittany/Kelly/Judy/Frankie (this varies based on generation) and she's got the same hungry look in her eyes. You both exchange glances with the rest of the group and see that you're not alone.

The clock is ticking to the beat of your growling tummy and you know it's going to be at least another hour before the group can decide on a restaurant. WHAT TO DO??

Well let me tell you, friends. Your group date troubles are a thing of the past – this collective eatery space is a modern day food hall...but good...and clean...and sans Betty the lunch lady. It has seven different food options ranging from American, to Japanese to Venezuelan, to name a few. This is the perfect spot for the group that just can’t decide. Located in the Lower Highlands neighborhood there is much to explore nearby.

Sushi-Den

Sushi Den

If you love sushi, you will love Sushi Den. If you’re obsessed with sushi, you will RESPECT Sushi Den. The Kizaki Brothers, who opened the restaurant, have been in the Japanese cuisine business for over three decades, so they really know what they’re doing.

Sushi Den flies in their fresh fish from one of Japan’s largest fish markets in Fukuoka, so if you were worried about Denver’s lack of oceans, rest assured, this Japanese raw fish is literally Japanese. Check it out.

I could spend this whole post talking about amazing spots to eat in Denver, but since this is a quilting blog, I’ll move on to the good stuff...

The Best Denver Fabric Shops

Denver’s restaurants aren’t the only fancy thing they have going for them...

Fancy Tiger Crafts

Fancy-Tiger-Crafts-Denver-Fabric

(The above photo is not your typical Saturday. This is a hot from the 7-year anniversary weekend celebration.)

Fancy Tiger Craft is owned by Jaime Jennings and Amber Corcoran (also known as @fancyjaime and @fancyamber), two passionate crafters who believe that “making things by hand makes people feel better.”

These gal pals are making the world a better place through crafting (aren’t we all?). Since 2006, Fancy Tiger has delivered the best in modern crafting supplies to the Denver area and beyond. In addition to their shop that will make you want to buy ALL THE SUPPLIES, Fancy Tiger hosts two large sewing studios and an expansive community space for events and handcrafting.

Every Tuesday night is Open Craft Night, where crafters of all ages, skill levels, and mediums show up to craft it out from 6 - 9pm. I don’t know about you, but being in the same room with other creatives really gets my juices flowing! Stop by and check it out if you’ve decided to overstay your weekend in Denver!

Denver-Fabric-Bliss

Fabric Bliss

Fabric Bliss is a little store packed with a lot of character. The shop has a huge selection of fabric, as well as yarn, and really helpful staff that are probably more excited about your project than you are. Meander through the sewing studio and knitting lounge while you’re there, and see if you can peek your head in on a class.

FB specializes in sewing instruction, so if you have run into any snags in your recent projects, consider picking the brains of the teachers if they are available.

One special service Fabric Bliss offers is comprehensive sewing machine cleaning. For $75, staff will clean, oil, and tune up any machine. It’s like a spa day for your best electrical bud! Not everyone packs their sewing machine in their carry-on, but if you did, you might want to take advantage of this chance to pamper your quilting sidekick.

Hours: 11:00am - 6:00pm every day

Wooden-Spools-Colorado

Wooden Spools

If you’re willing to venture out of town a few miles, Wooden Spools is worth a visit. It’s a quaint, folksy store with a cozy, small-town feel. Since it’s a little bit more out of the way, you can really take your time leisurely browsing the quilting fabric, notions, and tools.

Wooden Spools also offers a wider price range of discounted fabric. If you’re looking to find a bargain or unique items you probably won’t find anywhere else, Wood Spools is a must.

Amazing Places in Denver that Aren’t Fabric Shops

Guys, this wouldn't be an honest post if I didn't start with...

Molly-Brown-House-Museum

Molly Brown's House!

Do you love Debbie Reynolds as much as I do?? Well do you? Do YOU??

No...no, you probably don't. Also, most of you are probably scratching your head trying to connect the dots between Debbie Reynold, Molly Brown and Denver.

Well. With all of the crazy exuberance of my musical-loving heart, let me connect those dots for you. Debbie Reynolds played the role of Molly Brown in the 1964 movie musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. (Take a minute and watch this video....then watch the entire movie because it is ALL that good!!)

But in all seriousness, Molly Brown, the real Molly Brown was truly amazing and has a fantastic story. I was walking around Denver alone one afternoon when I stumbled onto her house museum. I was so excited to see inside I waited an hour until the next tour. And you know what? WORTH IT. Definitely worth it.

(If you find yourself in the same boat as me and have to wait a while for a tour, grab a bite to eat a few doors down at SubCulture. Aaaaaamazing sub sandwiches with a super casual setting. 1300 Pennsylvania Street.)

Location: 1340 Pennsylvania Street, Denver, Colorado 80203
Hours: Tours are scheduled Tue - Sat 10:00am - 3:30pm, Sun noon - 3:30pm

Denver-Downtown-Aquarium

The Denver Downtown Aquarium

The Downtown Aquarium is not messing around when it comes to ocean life. Not even for a minute. Denver’s aquarium is home to over 500 different aquatic species, with rotating exhibits that reveal even more of the deep dark ocean you never knew you never knew.

The Downtown Aquarium is also home to the Mystic Mermaids, an interactive, choreographed musical show where mermaids swim amongst their sea life friends, while teaching kids the importance of caring for their environment. The aquarium also has a restaurant and lounge where they definitely DO NOT serve any of their fishy friends.

Location: 700 Water St Denver, CO 80211
Hours: 10:00am - 9:00pm daily

Red-Rocks-Amphitheater

Red Rocks Park Amphitheater

The views here might not be of the mountains, but they are remarkable nonetheless. It’s a popular spot for all sorts of events: concerts, comedy shows, yoga, and movie nights populate the ever-changing calendar, but when there is no event going on you can come just to soak up the views of the city and the uniqueness of this natural amphitheater.

Thoughts from a local: Be prepared to also take in the view of lycra-clad locals running stairs and doing push-ups to keep up with that Colorado-fitness lifestyle.

Location: 18300 W. Alameda Parkway, Morrison, CO 80465
Hours: Check out the calendar to see what shows are coming up.

Ace Eat Serve – Denver’s Ping Pong Restaurant

I went to a ping pong bar in Chicago and had so much fun the next day I went out and bought a ping pong table to for my dining room table. Who needs to sit while they eat when ping pong is an alternative?? AmIright??

Unless you’re a Denver native, you will probably miss this great restaurant. And it really is a great restaurant. Not just good Asian-fusion food, but a hip ambiance and...total pinging-ponging extravaganza! Make a reservation for a ping pong table during happy hour, and see how well your skills hold up after a couple of drinks!

Ace Eat Serve also hosts Tuesday Tournaments which are free to participate in, with prizes for the first place winner! If you’re making a week out of your trip to Denver, I dare you to enter.

Location: 501 E 17th Ave, Denver, CO 80203
Hours: 4:00pm - midnight daily

Denver is a seriously cool city with some unique fabric shops, classy eats, and gorgeous outdoor scenery. If you’re flying into the Denver Airport however, beware of the blue mustang… don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I grew up in Denver, even played the part of Molly Brown in a grade school, but I got married and moved to San Diego almost 30 years ago. I still go back to visit my mom, I knew about Fancy Tiger, but not the other fabric shops – thanks for the info.

  2. Rebecca says:

I just moved to Denver! Fancy Tiger is a must! Fabric Bliss is tiny but has some hidden gems. My favorite in the area I think is A Quilter’s Corner in Erie. Fabricate in Boulder is another tiny shop but I’ve found good stuff there. I’d skip Lyons Quilting, it’s apparently the biggest quilt shop in Colorado but it’s largely batiks. They do carry the entire line of Kona and I found a few random things but I doubt I’d make another trip there.
Colorado Fabrics just moved locations and reopened and it’s on my list to visit.

  3. Michelle says:

Thanks for the tips for fun places to go! We would love to have you visit us at Craft Scraps! We have fabric and much, much more! We are located outside of the city, but we think it’s worth the trip!
