A Truly Beginner-Friendly Quilt Pattern

Each Voyage block includes just three different shapes, rotated and used in different parts of the block. They are:

  • Half square triangles
  • Half rectangle triangles
  • Squares

And that's it! And do you know the best part? If you are brand new to quilting, and feeling trepidation about setting off on this particular quilting voyage, I have filmed tutorial videos on each of these sections so you can rest assured that no part of this quilt will leave you confused or scratching your head.

Video Tutorials to Make a Fat Quarter Friendly Voyage Quilt

Video tutorial #1: How to make HSTs 4 at a time.

If you're new to making half square triangles, the first video tutorial that you may want to check out is how to sew your half square triangles, or HSTs. In this video I'll show you two different ways to sew your squares into HSTs as well as how to trim them.

Video tutorial#2: How to press seams in a quilt.

I don't cover pressing in the video above because we go over it in a lot of detail in a second video on pressing seams in a quilt. There is actually an entire blog post dedicated to this (How to Press Seams in a Quilt), but for just the video, click below.

Pressing is one of those underrated things in quilting that makes a really big difference. It's easy to rush through the process, but I bet you'll notice the difference in your accuracy if you take some extra time to press well.

Sidenote on Longarm Quilting

After scrolling through these photos, you've probably noticed the beautiful longarm quilting. Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting stitched both of these FQ Voyage quilts using (one of my favorite quilting patterns) the Modern Waves pano design.

I have yet to meet a quilt pattern this pano doesn't work with! For more information on hiring a longarm quilter, check out these posts:

Video tutorial #3: How to make half rectangle triangles.

Are half rectangle triangles, or HRTs, new to you? They aren't as common as HSTs, but when added to a quilt design they create a beautifully unique twist! The tutorial below shows how to start with two rectangles of fabric and cut, sew then trim them to be perfect little HRTs.

Can you find the HRTs in the quilt below? Scrappy might be blocking your view, but if you look closely I'm sure you'll see them. 😉

Video tutorial #4: How to chain piece Voyage quilt blocks.

In the past we have talked about how to chain piece quilt rows. For a full tutorial with video, check out this post, Chain Piecing Quilt Rows – Video Tutorial!

That same technique can be applied on a smaller scale when sewing our Voyage quilt blocks. The addition of the HRT does add a small quirk to the chaining, but this video will show you how to get past that.

I hate to mention this because the backing fabric isn't included in the kits, buuuut, isn't this backing scrummy yummm? It's sweetly soft Liberty of London Tana lawn I got from Duckadilly. The print is called Wiltshire Neon Sherbet.

Queen Voyage Quilt

Even though the larger versions of the Voyage quilt are not fat quarter friendly, they still have the same multi-color effect, you just need more fabric (cause they're bigger).

The quilt below was made by my friend Caitlyn.

King Quilt NOTE:

I highly recommend that you measure your king bed before making the king quilt. This quilt is designed for a large king bed that sits high off the ground. That is because when it comes to fabric requirements and math, it's easier for you to eliminate a row of blocks to make it smaller than add a row of blocks.

If you make the Voyage king quilt exactly like the pattern, it will finish at a large 120" 117". If you do not need your quilt to be that large leave off the bottom row of blocks and possibly the side row of blocks too. You should still keep the bottom border strip and HST strip so the quilt has symmetry.

Leaving off the bottom row of blocks will give you the same length as the queen quilt – 102".

Oh, my goodness! I love all of your quilts, but there is something about this new one that I absolutely adore! Love, love, love it!💜

  2. Nebbie says:

I would like to make this for my nephew that just bought his first house. Lives in FL and fav colors are Florida Gators. Blue and orange. I might do the front in orange from your kit and the backing in blue tone? Might be to much to do both bold colors on front?

    • Suzy Quilts says:

I think you have a lot of great options! You could try incorporating both colors in the front, or make the front in shades of blue or orange and then use the opposite color as backing.

Definitely! If you made an account you can access and download all of your purchased patterns there. You can also download the pattern again from the hyperlink emailed to you originally.
