Get the Fat Quarter Stars quilt pattern now and join the sew along starting October 10. This will last four weeks and cover everything from picking fabric, cutting, piecing, and finishing. I hope you join in; however, if the timing doesn't work, you can always find these supplemental posts in the Sew Along section.
I've been thinking about mashups lately. You know, when you take two good things, smash them together, and create a great thing? Like sprinkling salt on a chocolate chip cookie, listening to Elton John and Britney Spears pop-ify Tiny Dancer, and in the quilting world, sewing star blocks with fat quarters.
So, with the Fat Quarter Stars quilt pattern, have we gone from good to great? I think it's pretty close, at least!

Join the Fat Quarter Stars Sew Along!
It's been a while since we did a sew along, so Im incredibly excited to lead you in one with this pattern! A sew along is a multi-week blog series and community opportunity to make a quilt me!
I'll go over extra examples, break down the steps even further, and give you a chance to ask questions that come up along the way. These sew alongs are supplementary to the pattern, so even though we cover a lot, we don't cover everything. You do still need the pattern.
I know that life can get busy and you can't follow along with every sew along we offer. So these sew alongs stay on the blog forever and are easy to find so you can follow along at your own pace. Just pop over to the Sew Along tab where you can read past sew alongs. There's no sign up needed, so you can participate in the sew along on your own time!
Here's the Fat Quarter Stars sew along schedule:
- October 10: Pick fabric
- October 17: Cut fabric
- October 24: Sew blocks
- October 31: Assemble quilt top and explore quilting options

Make a Scrappy Fat Quarter Stars Quilt
For all the scrappy quilters out there, quilter Mary Warren created an adorably scrappy baby-sized Fat Quarter Stars quilt. If you want to make a scrappy version, Mary's tips below should help you!
- Choose the tones you want to work with and sort your scraps.
- The scraps you choose should be at least 5" in size.
- Look for treasured scraps to fussy cut for both the background and colorful squares, and don't be afraid to fussy cut yardage if you don't have any scraps.
- Spread your fussy cut prints throughout the entire quilt, creating cohesion in the "chaos."
- Sew the squares individually instead of strip piecing. This can be tedious, but it also allows you to choose and control the level of scrappiness.
- Be random, and have fun! Don't think about it too much and focus on the fabrics that whisper "hello."
- When your Fat Quarter Stars quilt is finished, part of the beauty will be the randomness, and the story the quilt tells will be filled with magic.
- I chose two shades of pink — a warmer pink and a cooler pink that is more on the purple side. By using two similar but contrasting colors it creates a sprinkled light. Choose colors that make you happy, that spark joy, and you will have the scrappiest, happiest quilt that will fill you with smiles 🙂
