The third pattern in our 2022 Companions series is almost here! Fireside is a bold design and a companion to a popular pattern you already know well — Campfire. Why are they companions, you ask? In a nutshell, these two have lots of similarities in style, and assembly. And yes, they look great together in a room.
Campfire is a classic medallion quilt, which means it grows from a single center piece of fabric. It's also based on the traditional Log Cabin design which represented life on the American prairie. To pioneers traveling West, a log cabin symbolized home, warmth, love, and security. The center square was usually made with red or orange fabric to represent the hearth, the focal point of life in a cabin or home.
In 2022 most of us are not living in log cabins, but we still know the feeling of snuggling up next to a fire and feeling the warmth and security it brings. Fireside once again takes the Log Cabin block and reinvents the design through a modern lens.
The scale of these blocks is big. The color blocking is bold. The symmetry of the layout creates balance throughout. These are beautiful qualities in a quilt, but what makes me especially excited is that Fireside mimics a medallion design, but instead of one huge block, this pattern tiles the mini medallions, making it very beginner friendly! The color placement was also designed intentionally to be user-friendly, so you don't need to worry about disrupting the balance of the design when picking fabrics.
Sarah Holst made the above quilt.

Campfire Quilt Pattern
Below is the Campfire quilt pattern. Both Fireside and Campfire use long strips or "logs" that build on each other around a center piece of fabric. Fireside does this through multiple quilt blocks while Campfire continually grows from the center out.
Fireside is written for a beginner skill level while Campfire requires a moderate skill level (because of the risk of getting off center while continually sewing something so big. Campfire in a baby size would be manageable for a beginner because it is smaller.)

These are all Art Gallery Fabrics PURE solids. You may notice that we use those solid fabrics a lot around here. That's because they are some of the highest quality solids you can get. Their tread count is so much higher than most other quilting cotton solids on the market, they are technically a poplin.
All Art Gallery Fabric is also OEKO-TEX certified which means that every piece of fabric is tested for harmful substances and takes into account numerous regulated and non-regulated substances.

4 Reasons Why I Love the Fireside Quilt Pattern (and you will too!)
This pattern checks a lot of boxes for me and is definitely at the top of my "Must Make Many Times" list. Here are a few reasons why I think you'll love making this quilt pattern too.
Reason #1: It looks amazing when draped.
Before you call me out for this being a silly reason, just hear me out. I don't say this about every quilt pattern. Because of the color-blocking placement no matter how you drape this quilt — on the floor, on a couch, over a chair, crumpled up in your toddler's crib, or on a public bench for a photo shoot, it will magically look amazing.
So if you have a family photo shoot coming up and want to LOVE the way your family looks on the quilt you handmade, this is the pattern for you. Just look at a few pics to see what I'm talking about.
Kim Vogelsang made the above quilt.
Place your newborn baby, dog, or morning coffee right in the center, and presto! A gorgeous photo.
The above quilt was made by Jennifer of Piper Autumn Fabrics and quilted by Michelle of Quilts Made with Love. Kits will be available for a limited time soon here!
Trying to get a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler to pose in the center of a quilt is 100% impossible, but I still think both quilt and baby look pretty sweet 😉

This lavender quilt leads me to my next reason...
Reason #2: So many options. (But not too many options.)
The Fireside pattern includes instructions for a multi-color version and a limited-color version. It also includes options for two different block layouts. I'll post more photos of both of these color variations, in a future blog post, but here are some examples of the different block layouts.
In the photo below I rotated the top and side blocks 180 degrees to create more of an optical illusion. It's up to you to decide which layout to make!
Once again Joanna is doing an excellent job staying still for a photo. You may recognize little Ae-Rin from this Quillow post too.
The mockups show how rotating the top, bottom, and side blocks can change the overall look. Which variation do you like better?
Reason #3: It's got the perks of a medallion, but is easier to make.
Do you love to fussy cut? Or maybe you'd like to try some embroidery on a quilt but don't know where to start? Or what about an appliqué monogram?
Typically I would suggest using these techniques on the center square of a medallion, but with Fireside, you have ample room in the center piece of fabric without needing the added skill of making an entire medallion quilt. As I mentioned before, Fireside is block-based, making it more manageable for a beginner sewer.
Reason #4: All quilting looks great. Promise.
In future blog posts, I'll highlight more quilting options, but just in these four quilts you can see examples of four completely different quilting motifs:
- Large-scale curves (Trace Creek Quilting - City of Fountains)
- Small-scale squiggles (Heather Alexander - Arches)
- Leafy vines (Heather Alexander - Boxed Twig)
- Art Deco triangles (Trace Creek Quilting - Sunrise Chevron)

Are you excited for the Fireside pattern?
I wish the quilts shown listed the fabrics used. Beautiful!
I am adding the list of fabric for the bright solids quilts right after posting this comment. The other purple quilts are kits found at the links in the comment above. The high contrast quilt that’s an alternate layout are random fabrics from my stash, and I’ll blog more about them in a later post.
It’s soooo good! I hope that purple one will be a kit! It’s gorgeous!
It will! what kind of batting did you use on the Fireside quilt at the top of page? Love that orange & cant wait to September 9th!
Trace Creek Quilting used bamboo batting 🙂
Think the pattern looks amazing! Would it be possible to confirm the backing fabric used on the “bright” colourway please? It’s a particularly beautiful print!
We love this pattern too! Here is that lovely backing fabric! You can purchase it from Sarah Made, which is also the shop selling the bright kit: https://sarah-made.com/product/meadow-in-cream-by-rifle-paper-co/
Love the Fireside pattern!!
But curious what the 3rd companion pattern is? Did I miss a post or fail to read carefully?? Campfire is attractive but confess I like the new pattern better.
Hi Kane! We’re glad you like our latest pattern! Fireside is the 3rd quilt in this year’s companion quilt series. We started the year with Adventureland (companion to Sugar POP), then released Shining Star (companion to Shine and Stars Hollow), and now we’re about to release Fireside (companion to Campfire). We hope you love making this pattern! 🙂
I clicked through because of the pattern name! Fireside is also a product similar to Minkie that is sold (I think) exclusively in Canada. It has a short pile and less stretch, but still all the cuddly awesomeness of Minkie.
And since it comes in loads of solid colors, I think it would turn out AWESOME used in the from of this quilt pattern!
I am definitely looking forward to trying it.
Hi…I am looking for a kit with the Multi-colored Fireside Quilt, the quilt that is draped over the bench where the children are seated on and standing beside the quilt. The colors are hot pink, grass green, purple and blue. Is there a kit for that version?
Thanks!
Sounds like this is the one you’re looking for! Make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter — when every pattern comes out, we always include kits in our newsletter. Another amazing pattern! I love that you include so many placement options and color ideas. I would love to see pillow and wall hanging sizes too. Is that possible?
I’m so glad you like it! To keep this same design, the strips would have to get super duper thin for a pillow or wall hanging. Strips for the baby quilt are already at 1.75″ wide. You could make something similar with fewer strips.
How can I get the fireside pattern
We’re so glad you like Fireside! you can either click the Fireside link in the first paragraph of this blog post, or head to our shop to buy it at this link: https://suzyquilts.com/shop/fireside-quilt-pattern-download/
Enjoy! 🙂
