Liberty & Flowers is a free throw-sized quilt pattern download that is moderate in skill level because it uses triangle templates. Templates are included in the pattern and make this design ideal for fussy cutting specialty fabric and/or using fabric scraps.

If you are newer to quilting but would still like to try out this pattern, we have a lot of helpful resources to guide you along the way. Some of these tips come in the form of additional free tutorial blog posts while others are quilting notion recommendations.

How to Hand Quilt

I love hand quilting, especially on smaller projects. I jazzed up the outer border of this Liberty & Flowers wall hanging by using four different colors of hand quilting thread—yellow, red, light blue, and lavender. For more information on hand quilting, and a video tutorial on how to do it, check out this post, How to Hand Quilt (with Video Tutorial!)

Hand Quilting Supplies

My go-to hand quilting supplies are simple:

How to Hang a Quilt

I used the templates from the free Liberty & Flowers quilt pattern and made a couple of coordinating wall hangings—a black one and a red one. Since these are wall hangings, they need to hang on a wall! To do that, I needed to sew a sleeve to the back of each quilt, then make a simple rod to slip through the sleeve.

If you are interested in hanging a mini quilt too, I have tutorials on how to sew a sleeve to the back of a quilt and how to hang the quilt so it looks like it's floating on the wall, in the How to Hang a Quilt blog post.

Isn't that gingham and mustard combo adorable? It gives me all the warm summer picnic vibes.

Years ago I flew to Switzerland to work with BERNINA on the rollout of the BERNINA 5 Series. As a fun "party favor" to add to the celebration, I designed this free Liberty & Flowers quilt pattern just for you! Click here for the instant to download!

This red, gray, and mustard wall hanging used a combination of Liberty of London, linen, and a sweet cream floral from Birch Fabrics. I only had small pieces of the two floral fabrics, which worked out great because I only needed small pieces!

You can tell that this quilt is crinklier than the black one because it's been washed a few times. Once I had my second child I took both of these quilts off the wall and used this one for tummy time. The only problem was my cute little baby had some not-so-cute acid reflux, making tummy time a messy business. Oh well! Just look at that smile!!

Scrappy was a faithful companion during Joanna's tummy time struggles. Scrap couldn't understand why baby Jo needed to fuss so much about laying on a quilt. Scrappy had been lounging on quilts for years with nary a peep!

Finally, Scrappy had enough and decided to show Joanna how it's done. I actually think that did help for a minute.

Below is the original Liberty & Flowers throw quilt made as the size given in the pattern. This was over five years ago now. Doesn't Scrap look so much younger? The children have aged her. 😉

I free motion quilted this using the BSR on my BERNINA 570 QE. Below is a fun little tutorial on using the BSR followed by another tutorial video on how to free motion quilt simple scallops, one of my favorite free motion quilting motifs!

Love the books leveling the furniture legs in the background of the Baby and Scrappy (covering her ears) photo. Keepin’ it real!

I love this Liberty and Flowers pattern because the patterns pieces are easy to fit together. I sew for
Needy Children with other women and I am taking this pattern with me to our next meeting. The
pattern pieces are so simple and easy to put together that the newest sewers can easily put this quilt together. I am so glad to be able to print this pattern and we will put it to good use. Thank you so much.

Thanks for another lovely pattern. When you made the baby quilt did you change the block size? It looks like the blocks are a bit larger. Thanks again

  6. Carolyn says:

This is an amazing pattern! Thanks for all the great instructions. Can’t wait to make this one….a perfect summer project. You have an adorable daughter & cute dog….loved the photos! Why is it that dogs just have to lay on your quilt? Especially when you are trying to pin it!

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Madison! To make the Liberty & Flowers quilt smaller, we recommend deciding how many blocks you want to make, and then you can decide to add a border of any size! The baby in this blog post is actually laying on a wall hanging that is 4 blocks by 4 blocks. Have fun!
