We've talked a lot about the Modern Fans quilt pattern here on the blog. We've covered color schemes and block layouts, sewing techniques and cutting tips. We even had a nine-week sew along full of videos and prizes to help get you excited about sewing curves. At this point, you might think we've covered it all! But one thing that we quilters never get tired of hearing about is beautiful fabric. This post is all about a sparkly Gatsby inspired Modern Fans quilt kit!

It's December 31, 2019 today. In less than 24 hours we will cross over into a new decade. A date that looks so futuristic, I have a hard time believing 2020 is upon us and I don't own a hover skateboard from Back to the Future.

New Year's Eve always makes me think of the parties described in The Great Gatsby. My NYE parties may not be as glamorous, but I still like to dream of champagne fountains, couture dresses and glittering Art Deco decor. With this Modern Fans quilt kit I can't promise you Champagne or fancy flapper dresses, but I can ensure some 1920s glam.

Looking at this metallic splatter fabric I can actually hear a cork pop and imagine Champagne fizzing over the top of a glass. Cheers!

LOVE your blog. I’m interested in the little bit of label that is showing!! How was that done? I usually do the same, but on a corner label and never thought of stitching it right on the back. Any tips for measuring?

Great question! Nuria from Fabric Stork made this quilt, so she could tell you for sure. I think if it were me, I would do something similar to how you line up prints in a kaleidoscope quilt. If you are a floor baster, once the backing is secured to the floor, pierce the perimeter of the embroidered area with straight pins – kinda like if you were creating a bed of nails (pointy side up). Then place your batting on top, also pierced by the pins, then the quilt top – again, pierced by the pins exactly where you want it to line up. Does that make sense?

Once you have the three layers lined up, remove the straight pins and secure the sandwich with safety pins or basting spray – whichever you prefer.

What kind of batting did you use for this one? Love that clamshell quilting pattern and the fabrics oh my!!
