The Perennial quilt sew along will help you make this beautiful modern quilt through added instructions, pictures and tips! suzyquilts.com

Hello, quilters! I am so thrilled to sew together as we make a Perennial Quilt! You may notice that I am a new face to the SQ blog, but I'm not new to SQ quilts. I've made many Suzy Quilts patterns over the years and have been sewing for almost 20 years. With all of that experience, I have lots of tips, notions, and ideas that are possibly new to you. I'm so excited to bring my own personal spin to a sew along!

I'm Sarah—fabric shop owner, quilter, mom, and your host for the Perennial quilt sew along. My favorite quilts are block-based and have vibrant colors with modern prints.

You have probably seen the Perennial Quilt before. Maybe you're scratching your head and thinking, "Wait a minute, why are we doing a sew along now? Isn't this an older pattern?" Yes, it is! But many of the older Suzy Quilts patterns were written before the consistent sew alongs you know and love began. So we're starting a series of sew alongs for those older patterns so we can share all our best tips and tricks for every pattern! I can't wait to take you on a journey to make this modern floral-inspired quilt!

If the Perennial quilt pattern seems intimidating, let me set your fears to rest. These triangles gently introduce improv cutting and sewing while still maintaining structure so the quilt sews together neatly and uniformly. And did I mention they are so fun to make?

While this pattern is fat quarter and fat eighth friendly, you can also go rogue and use scraps. It is a perfect opportunity to make a fresh, spring quilt with lots of variety and show off your creative skills.

Get set for a fresh spin on the Perennial quilt full of tips and lots of inspiration. Not to mention there will be PRIZES! If you happen to fall behind or need to join in late, no problem. These blog posts will always be available to you in the Sew Along tab, so if something comes up and you need to push pause on the sewing for a while, no worries! You know where to find us.

The Perennial quilt pattern is fun, modern and looks like a field of wildflowers! suzyquilts.com

Perennial Sew Along Schedule

This sew along officially starts on Friday, May 13, but I suggest you start thinking about your fabric for this project now, especially if you plan on ordering something online. If you are interested in purchasing a Perennial quilt kit, I have four different ones in my fabric shop at Sarah Made.

Weeks 2 and 3 may feel a little fast, but that's because I wanted you to get all of the triangle-making tips ASAP. If the assignment for those weeks spills into Week 4 that's totally fine and doesn't mean you won't finish. You can also jump in and get a head start by looking at the Week 3 and Week 4 sew along posts from the Mod Mountains pattern. (These blocks are made the same way and even the same size! So convenient!!)

  • Week 1, May 13: Pick fabric and gather supplies
  • Weeks 2 & 3, May 20 and 27: Cut fabric, sew and trim triangles
  • Week 4, June 3: Sew triangles into rows
  • Week 5, June 10: Sew rows together and finish the quilt top

How's excited to jump in and make a Perennial quilt with me?!

Hello! My questions is, do you suggest washing the fabric? When I first started quilting, all instructions were to not wash fabric which is contrary to garment sewing. But I followed the rules! Now it seems I am seeing and hearing instructors requesting to wash fabric. What are your thoughts on this subject? Thank you.

    • Alison says:

From my experience (which is like 6 years of unstructured, untrained quilting 😂) it depends on the project and how comfortable you are with potential fabric bleeding, crinkling, ironing yards of fabric, ect. I will wash fabric for projects like foundation paper piecing so I can minimize shrinkage and crinkling. I also don’t enjoy handling unwashed fabric since it has sizing/dirt/whatever it picked up between the factory and the store!

I absolutely think your genius with your quilt patterns and are such an inspiration to me. I love watching all your videos and love how you break down and explain stuff.
