The best thing about naming a quilt pattern after a 90s hip hop band, is that people aren't quite sure if that's what you meant to do. For example, I tell someone that my newest pattern release is called Kris Kross, and this is typically what follows:

Unsuspecting Quilter Trying to be Polite: Kris Kross...that's an interesting name. huh. It's not supposed to be about that band from 20 years ago, is it?

Trending patterns!

Me: You got it!

UQTP: oh. Were they the ones who wore their pants backwards or something?

Me: They sure did! So kool, right??

UQTP: ya...cool. Did you mean to do that?

hahaha I really don't get sick of having that conversation. And if you think Kris Kross is a bad name, let me tell you that if it wasn't for the intervention of wiser friends, it would have been worse. Much worse...

This quilt started off as my block design for the Tiled Indigo Block of the Month Club hosted by Cristi of Whimsy Quilts & Fabrics. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to name my block, but since I love alliteration and 90s hip hop, the naming process went a little something like this...

Me: Am I supposed to name this?

Cristi: Sure!

Me: ok, ok let me think... I'm going to have to go with...KRIS KROSS! no...Hot Crossed Buns! no...KRIS KROSS BUNS! no...I think I can do better...What about just BUNZ!? eh?

C: haha I love you!

M: so BUNZ??

C: well...

Me: no BUNZ?

C: I think...no bunz.

Cristi saved the day, because this pattern just wouldn't have been the same without these classic hits rattling around in your brain during the ENTIRE sewing process.

you're welcome ;)

And also let me assure you that this pattern passed my quality control manager's thorough assessment with FLYING colors. She rolled, scratched, rubbed and performed morning vinyassa on this quilt before giving it two paws up.

This picture was taken right after I told her to move her bunz so I could take a dog-less shot. She did NOT approve of that.

To finish off my Kris Kross baby quilt I machine quilted a ¼" away from the seams. For some added texture and visual interest I hand stitched white Xs inside each black "kross." For hand-quilting, I use DMC #8 Pearl Cotton Thread, Clover Gold Eye embroidery needles and always a needle threader.

Great idea letting the the stripes do the work for you! And the addition of just a little hand quilting really compliments the design.

    • Suzy says:

Thank you, Paige! I’m not usually patient enough to hand quilt an entire quilt, but little touches here and there are so nice! xo

  2. Christie says:

I absolutely LOVE your quilts, and I’m off to buy two patterns right now. I can’t wait for the Warrior Quilt to come out also! Great work, great style. Thank you!

    • Suzy says:

Thank you! I’m working with pattern testers right now to iron out all of the kinks in the Warrior quilt pattern. Should be available soon!

  3. JulieAnn says:

It’s all in the detail! Your stripe matching is amazing. The blue quilt is so crisp and gorgeous! Love your quilts, love your patterns!

  4. Gretchen Jewell says:

Your instructions for Kriss Kross is super easy ! I’m loving the process of making this quilt ! Thank you !

    • Suzy Quilts says:

Well, I think you may have done one of two things – cut your pieces a bit too small or used a larger than 1/4″ seam allowance. Is it possible that either of those things happened? The good news is that you can still use what you have. Just trim your blocks so that they are all consistent (it sounds like that will be about 6″). Your quilt will end up smaller, but all of your blocks will fit together. You can also make more blocks if you are worried about overall quilt size.

If you would like to upload pics or get more specific assistance on this, post to the Suzy Quilts Patterns Facebook group page and we can troubleshoot more from there.

What are the yardages for the 3 color turquoise/orange/white quilt shown on page 4 of the KrisKross quilt pattern? I am math challenged! Thanks! Zoe

  6. Jen says:

I’m confused about cutting the pieces on the bias. Do you have a blog about this somewhere? I’ve never cut quilt squares on the bias before and noticed you said to do this on your tutorial. I don’t see that in the pattern though.

    • Suzy Quilts says:

Hey Jen, the only pieces that get cut on the bias are the Color 4 squares that are cut in half. I have a blog post describing bias fabric in more detail here – https://suzyquilts.com/whats-special-bias-binding/ Did that answer your question? If you are still confused, I suggest posting a question on the Suzy Quilts Patterns Facebook group. It’s full of sweet and smart people who are fast to give helpful answers.

  7. Kathryn Winters says:

I was wondering if the Kriss Kross pattern includes instructions on how to make the design larger, like the picture of the blue one?
    Thanks!

    • Suzy Quilts says:

The picture of the blue Kris Kross uses the same dimensions as the pattern, it’s just a close up on few blocks sewn together. The pattern includes instructions for just one size of block.

  8. Lindsey Treon says:

I’ve been wanting to make this pattern for a long time & am finally making it for a friend’s baby! Possibly a dumb question, but do you press your seams open or to one particular side?
