Make a Desert Valley Inspired Mosaic Quilt

Be inspired by colors of the desert and make your own Mosaic quilt. With warm solid fabrics, this quilt pattern looks modern and timeless! suzyquilts.com #quiltkit #quiltpattern

This Mosaic quilt accents warm cream, walnut, and dusty orange with the rich hues of mulberry and peach. I took my favorite colors from the desert and brought them into one quilt!

You can get the Mosaic pattern here. The original Mosaic quilt was my first foray into hand quilting an entire throw-size quilt. You can read more about my design process and how that quilt came into being here.

Get the Mosaic Quilt Kit

This exact quilt kit is currently sold at fabricworm using Birch Organic Poplin Solids. These fabrics are silky and light. Paired with a bamboo blend batting, it would make the perfect warm-weather quilt. The backing is Bedtime Story Heather by Jenny Ronan. The fabrics include:

  • Color 1: Orange (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 2: Cream (1 1/4 yd.)
  • Color 3: Heather (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 4: Mulberry (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 5: Shell (1/4 yd.)
  • Background: Toast (1 5/8 yd.)
  • Binding: Mulberry (1/2 yd.)

Since I have a feeling this quilt kit will sell out rather quickly, I'm including lists of solids from other manufacturers in similar colors. Keep in mind all of these solids feel differently and the manufacturers carry slightly different shades too, but I'll try to get really close to the original.

Michael Miller Cotton Couture

Cotton Couture has been one of my favorite lines of solids for over a year because of its silky soft drape and beautiful sheen. This line is not as light as the Birch Poplin Solids, but it has a similar softness to it. (My ombré Nordic Triangles quilt was made with Cotton Couture solids.)

At the time of this post it looks like Hawthorne Supply Co. carries all of the Cotton Couture colors and Amazon also has a large selection.

  • Color 4: Burgundy (1/2 yd.)

Robert Kaufman Kona

Kona has the most color variety as well as the best price, which makes it a very popular choice. Multiple shops carry Kona solids. Fat Quarter Shop has a huge variety of precuts and yardage. Even Amazon, if you like the Prime membership shipping, sells everything from Kona jelly rolls to yardage.

  • Color 1: Cedar (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 2: Bone (1 1/4 yd.)
  • Color 3: Khaki (1/2 yd.)

Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids

I was recently introduced to AGF Pure Solids and it's been such a pleasant surprise! These fabrics have a similar lightness in drape to the Birch Organic Poplin, but are not as transparent. Currently this line has a smaller variety of colors than the other two previous brands. You can find AGF solids at Fat Quarter Shop as well, however if you like to shop on Etsy, many fabric shops carry these too.

  • Color 1: Raw Gold (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 2: Creme De La Creme (1 1/4 yd.)
  • Color 3: Sandstone (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 4: Candied Cherry (1/2 yd.)
  • Color 5: Sweet Macadamia (1/4 yd.)
  • Background: Toasty Walnut (1 5/8 yd.)
  • Binding: Candied Cherry (1/2 yd.)

Scrappy had a really hard time giving this quilt up. Currently, it's living at the Fabricworm store in Paso Robles. Maybe one day Scrappy will get to be reunited...

My talented friend, Caitlyn, made this quilt for me, so actually, once it's finished making the rounds at Fabricworm it will be shipping back to her. Sorry, Scrap.

Hi Suzy, between the Cotton Couture and Kona Solids options, which would you say is truest to the colors of the Birch Organics? Unfortunately the kit and most of the birch organics yardage options are sold out on fabricworm, as you predicted. Thank you!

Hi Suzy, I’ve just started cutting my fabric for the mosaic quilt. Sorry if this is a stupid question but does the triangle template include a seam allowance or do I need to add that?

    Hey!
I am trying to purchase the mosaic quilt pattern but the website isn’t allowing me to. Is there anything that can be done to fix this so i can purchase the pattern?

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Piper! Our website recently experienced some issues which have been resolved. You should be able to add patterns to your cart and checkout as usual now! Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you need any additional help 🙂

  6. Karen says:

Hi Suzy! I purchased this pattern recently and want to make the four color version shown at the end of the pattern. Are there yardage requirements for this option somewhere? So excited to make this beautiful quilt. Thanks!

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Karen! There are no separate fabric requirements for a four-color version of Mosaic. But it looks like you should be able to make Color 4 the same as Color 1 and also adjust the squares in the center a little bit. You can do that by bumping up your fabric requirements just a smidge to make sure you have enough fabric! I’m pretty sure that will get you the desired four-color look 🙂
