Have you ever made a rainbow quilt? You may be surprised to read this, but I haven't made many. When I put fabrics together for a new quilt, I think a lot about where the quilt will live and how it will be styled in a room.

When you decide to make a rainbow quilt, however, you can't put too much emphasis on things like "will this match my home decor?" Unless, of course, you live inside a cloud or tree house or Pride parade float. The truth is, a quilt this colorful is a statement piece and there's no skirting around it. You have to own it.

So my thought? Let's make it bold. Let's make it soft! (obvi) And let's make it worth the double take because, friends, when this quilt is in a room, everyone will be looking twice in its direction.

The quilt featured in this post is the Glitter & Glow quilt pattern. Get it here in the shop!

This quilt was sewn by the talented Michelle Collins of Meesh Quilts.

Everyone will be looking at your rainbow quilt, that is, unless there is a cute baby wriggling around on top of it. Then, unfortunately for your quilt, it will immediately fade into the background.

Note to Self: Almost-one-year-old babies do not stay still...ever.

Can you believe this squirmy babe is just days away from his first birthday? Wasn't it yesterday that I was publishing the good news of his birth??

...oh my gosh this kid melts me!!! Before I tell you all of the details on remaking this rainbow quilt (you can skim for that below) let me get just a little bit sappy...

On February 1, 2020 my little Desi turns one and oh how this past year has been full of wonder! He came into my world standing up even though I spent weeks trying to get him to flip in my belly. When the doctor placed him on my chest I felt every piece of me crack open with love.

The bright lights of the operating room, the doctors, the beeps of 20 different machines, they all faded away. It was just my baby and me. The instant affection I had for those small fingers and tiny little wrists (he had the daintiest wrists) was too much for my physical body to hold! I thought I would break.

Friends, I could write a much longer post about what this past year has been like becoming a mom for the first time and raising the sweetest baby in the world. 😉 But, I'll spare you and save that for my personal diary. *wipes away a tear*

Now, back to this fantastic Glitter & Glow rainbow quilt!

Make a Glitter & Glow Rainbow Quilt

The main instructions in the Glitter & Glow pattern are for the "Glow" version. That is the four-color version you can see in this post. Pages 13-15 of the PDF pattern include instructions on how to transform your Glow quilt into one that glitters!

Glitter is the scrappy kid sister to Glow. To make a Glitter quilt, substitute the yardage found on page 2 with scraps, fat quarters, or a mix to make this versatile design sparkle with your own unique twist! Page 15 includes instructions and fabric requirements to make this exact rainbow Glitter variation.

Rainbow Quilt Fabric

What makes this quilt so soft is that almost every single piece of it is made with extra cuddly shot cotton by Windham Fabrics. This Artisan Cotton is a beautiful cross-dyed quilt-weight cotton that acts like a solid but with some spice! The rich, saturated colors truly pop and are simply spectacular.

Because each fabric is woven with two different colors of thread, the sheen and hue of these colors shimmers and changes from angle to angle. You could almost say that these fabrics glow...

  • Fat Quarters of all of the colors
  • Background: Blue/Aqua - 2 1/4 yd.
  • Diamonds: White/Aqua - 1/4 yd. and Light Cream - 1/2 yd. (not Artisan Cotton)
  • Binding: Navy/Cyan - 1/2 yd.
  • Backing: Turquoise/Jade - 3 3/4 yd.

If your local fabric shop does not have these shot cotton fabrics in stock, it's worth it to turn to the internet. After a quick Google search I see that one of my favorite fabric shops, fabricworm, is well equipped.

Now, Desi wants to know what you plan to get him for his birthday. 😉

But I want to know about your adventures in rainbow quilt making! Do you frequently make rainbow quilts? What are your favorite fabrics to use?

Aww, Suzy, Desi is absolutely adorable. Happy Birthday to this sweet little guy.

Your rainbow quilt is beautiful and it looks like it was a fun quilt to make.

I can’t say that I’ve ever made a rainbow quilt (are they always done in solids? I still have yet to make a solid quilt but want to) But I can say that most of my quilts for the past 10 years or so (not counting that I haven’t worked on a quilt for a year now) have been filled with lots of different colors.

For me it is always easier to make a quilt filled with many pretty colors, the more colors and fabrics the merrier. When I can get back to working on quilts again (how I hope that’s sooner than later) I may just challenge myself to make a quilt with just two colors.
