Heeeeey-oh! How are we doin', Mod Mountaineers? You still with me? The next two weeks get reeeeally exciting, so I want to make sure that your bags are packed and you're geared up for a sewing adventure!

If you're brand new to this Mod Mountains sew along, let me catch you up on a few things before beginning this week's climb. (And by climb, I mean leisurely stroll...but obvi while still looking cute in our mountaineering gear. We're like, the glam squad of mountaineering. Glam-aineering. Nope, nope that didn't work. Am I still talking about this? uhum. Back to the sew along.)

Mod Mountains Sew Along Weeks 4 & 5

Before you ask, let me answer a couple questions you may have – "Why are you combining Weeks 4 and 5? Are you combining the prizes??"

The first answer is because Colors 2 and 3 are a loose guide in the pattern. Many of you, including myself, combined both colors to make a scrappier version of Mod Mountains. If you are sticking with one color group for Color 2 and a second color group for Color 3, simply stick to the schedule and sew 24 mini mountains this week and 25 mini mountains next week.

The second answer is nope! Two weeks = two prizes!!

Note: After posting the pictures below, I see now that I flipped my sewing process. The pattern has you sewing the opposite side first. Well, as you can see, it really doesn't matter which side you sew first, as long as the base of your triangle is still large enough that you have room to trim.

Above you can see that I'm sporting my favorite notion, the magnetic slap bracelet pin holder. No quilt-aineer (did that work better?) should leave home without one.

Colors 2 & 3 Triangle Tips

By now you most likely have all of your pieces cut and you're ready to sew strips to triangles. Reference pages 3 of the pattern for step by step illustrations on how to do that. In the instructions you press your seams towards the darker fabric. I will usually say this in my patterns because I have a deathly fear of dark rogue threads showing up under my light fabric once everything has been quilted.

If you do not share this fear, or if you are using fabrics that are darker than light gray (whites and creams can give you trouble), press your seams open or out away from Template C. Basically, just do what feels right here and don't get bogged down by what I tell you in the pattern.

Using a Clear Vinyl Template A

If you created your own Template A from a clear vinyl sheet, similar to what we did in the Modern Fans quilt pattern, trimming these mini mountain blocks will be a snap. Simply lay your template down, adjust it to the level of wonkiness you like, and trim! Since you can see all three sides of the triangle at once, there's no extra measuring.

Using a 60-Degree Triangle Ruler

If you are using a ruler, I find it easiest to trim the bottom first, then line up that edge with the 6 ¾" guideline on the ruler. See below for pictures of my cutting process. The exact triangle ruler I am using is the Clearview 60-degree ruler and I have added ruler grips to stop it from sliding.

Before doing any trimming, I lay my ruler on top of the block to get as sense of where the base of the triangle will be.

Cut the bottom first…brilliant! I was making it too complicated! This is why I love sew alongs with Suzy! Thanks!

  2. Jennifer Merriman says:

    Hi Suzy,
I’m anxiously awaiting my fabric which I ordered and it has not yet arrived. I think I’ll be able to catch up when it comes. My question is, I have a Fons and Porter 60° triangle ruler. It is flat topped and the very bottom measurement is 6 1/2”. Will this suffice or do I need a bigger ruler?

  3. Lynne Hoefer says:

Suzy, can you share any recommendations you have on how to press the rows when joining them? We’ll have bulk coming from the points on both rows when we join them. This linen blend fabric I’m using does have some thickness so I wasn’t sure what to do. Thanks so much, Lynne
