Mod Mountaineers, our blocks are sewn. Our mountains have been climbed! All that's left to do is enjoy the view from the top and begin our decent. This is when you get to lay everything out, step back and give yourself a rewarding pat on the back. I'm big on rewarding myself, so I'll probably be tapping that box of wine sitting on my counter.

If you're reading about this sew along for the very first time, welcome! You'll have to do some quick sewing to get caught up, but it can be done. If you're reading this post long after the sew along is finished, you can still reap the benefits of step-by-step videos, tips and photo tutorials.

Mod Mountains Sew Along Weeks 6 & 7

Since Weeks 4 and 5 got mashed together and you didn't fuss, I thought I'd try it again and see how it goes. We will still have a separate prize for each week, but you'll be doing the same thing – sewing rows together. To stay on track with making a throw-sized Mod Mountains quilt, you will need to sew 5 rows both weeks.

Doable? Tooootally.

Especially since included in the Mod Mountains quilt pattern is a video tutorial on exactly how to sew those mountains into mountain ranges. (Are you tired of my mountain metaphors yet? Oh you'll miss them when they're gone.)

This first video demonstrates how to sew triangles together that have pointy tops based on Template A (found in the pattern). The second video is for those of you who used flat-top rulers.

Tips for Sewing Triangle Rows Together

First thing's first. Before sewing any rows together, I highly suggest you lay all of your triangle blocks out and step back. I know I joked about this earlier, but this is the time to make your final decisions on layout. If you have a feisty little pet who feels the need to sit on everything placed on the floor, you will probably want to use a design wall.

At this point, I also like to snap a quick photo on my phone. For some reason seeing the quilt on a tiny screen makes it easier for me to evaluate if my colors and fabrics are nicely dispersed.

Once you have moved your mountains about and decided on the layout, now sew.

  1. Gather each row starting from one side and moving to the next. I like to form a neat little pile that I can place by my sewing machine.
  2. With the two top pieces, place right sides together and sew, as seen in the video and as written in the pattern.
  3. Use a shot of steam and a Tailor's Clapper to get the crispest, flattest seams on the planet. (Read more about Tailor's Clappers here in this blog post.)
  4. Just keep sewing!

Three rows sewn so far, and already planning the next Mod Mountains quilt 😂 this is a fantastic pattern! The Mod Mountains are calling, and I must sew 😂

  2. Cynthia Gottlieb says:

Great 2 videos! I think this will be my next quilt project. 2 things I have learned along the way. To prevent those little triangle tips from being sucked into the Bernina is to change out the throat plate to a small single hole. One has to remember to change this out if you are using other than a straight stitch though. Second thought on sewing with linen is reduce your stitch length to say 2 or 2.1. This helps with the fraying but may not cure the potential to stretch on the bias seams.
