2021 has already been a much different year than 2020. That's why it's only fitting we look ahead with hope, excitement and joy as we embark on new creative endeavors – such as this New Horizons quilt pattern!
New Horizons uses two beginner techniques to create all of the blocks. Even though you will be cutting and sewing a few side-setting triangles to make the quilt top, here on the blog and in the pattern we walk you through everything, so even the most beginner sewist can make this pattern.
And don't forget to plan on joining us for the New Horizons sew along starting June 30! You can check out past sew alongs in the Sew Along tab.
The New Horizons quilt pattern includes fabric requirements and instructions for both a limited-color version and a multi-color version, seen here.
The limited color version uses yardage, but most sizes of the multi-color version use fat quarters or scraps! For this first example, I was able to pull all of the fabric from my stash. Isn't it fun when you can do that?
Trending patterns!
Since posting this photo of my sewing table in the SQ newsletter a couple weeks ago, I've gotten a lot of questions about it. Well, if you are in the market and haven't heard about Tracey's Tables, I I can't recommend this company enough!
I drug my feet for months before making the purchase because I was nervous to buy such a large and expensive item off the internet without seeing it first; however after taking some measurements and reading all of the 5-star reviews, I took the plunge – and I'm so happy I did!
Not only was this table made with expert craftsmanship, the maker of the table delivered it AND helped my husband carry it up TWO flights of stairs into my attic sewing studio. Talk about going above and beyond!
This table isn't just pretty to look at, it's fold-out leaves make quilting much easier. Oh! And it rolls! I use this same space to baste my quilts on the floor, so once I'm finished piecing at the table, I fold down the leaves and roll the table off to the side so I have the space I need.
I didn't mean for this post to become a sales pitch for Tracey's Tables, but apparently I can't help myself. Also, before you ask, my chair is Steelcase. 😉 Now back to the quilt pattern!
I'm currently in the process of quilting this rainbow New Horizons quilt, as you can see in the video below. My sewing occurs slowly and infrequently these days, but you won't hear me complaining. I know this season with my baby girl is short and I'm trying to soak it up!

New Horizons Quilt Kits!
For a very limited time you can purchase quilt kits in these two Warm and Cool color schemes from the Suzy Quilts shop. The kits will be available June 11 along with the release of the pattern. Which version do you like better?
Sweet baby JoJo will be two months old on June 10!
Quilts in the Wild!
These next New Horizons quilts are brought to you by some of the sewists who made this New Horizons pattern. Aren't they inspiring?
Tropical Baby Quilt
This quilt is based on the limited-color version, but with a twist. Nicki from Woven and Woolly used Art Gallery Fabrics PURE solids for the quilt top and a couple fun tropical prints from the Boscage collection by Katarina Roccella.
Primary New Horizons
This multi-color New Horizons quilt by Brittney, (yes, THAT Brittney) plays with primary colors for a bright and spunky overall appearance.
Scrappy Baby
Catalina, being the fabulous over-achiever that she is, made not just an adorable scrappy baby quilt, but also sliced up yardage for a limited-color version!
Spring Blossom Quilt
Courtney made this springtime themed quilt by creating color groups of four fabrics for each row of blocks, totally 5 unique blocks. Isn't it pretty?
Grape Jelly Quilt
Jessica used various shades of navy, maroon and purple fat quarters to make her New Horizons quilt. She even used the extra fabric from making the blocks to sew a scrappy binding! If you're drooling over the longarm quilting, check out Trace Creek Quilting – a St. Louis based longarmer who accepts quilts from all over the USA, including most of mine!
Toasty Warm Quilt
Beautiful fabric cut up and sewn into an absolutely beautiful quilt! Jordan has an amazing eye for mixing colors and prints. Oh la la!
California Sunshine Quilt
My favorite mother-daughter duo, Julie and Rachel, owners of the Sewing Arts Center in Santa Monica, CA have created one of the happiest quilts I've ever seen. You can't help but smile when you see it!
Cool as a Cucumber Quilt
Kim partnered with the much beloved quilt shop, Crimson Tate, to bring you this quilt kit to help cool you off during the hot summer months.
Expect the Unexpected Quilt
Once again Maggie has collected a beautiful arrangement of fabrics and paired them with an unexpected background color to achieve a fabulous quilt completely unique to her! Now are you thinking what I'm thinking? Future quilt coat! Or maybe quilt cape?
Hi Suzy, I love the new Horizon quilt pattern like all of your creative designs – but please do not mind me saying that the instructions leave a lot to desire! Especially when it comes to cutting instructions. It is just not practical to have different numbering per size, but also the cutting image has no sizes either. So I have to scroll up, check what number it is ( e, or g, f, etc.), find the size, than scroll back to the instructions and so on and on.
Furthermore, I feel the font is too small and there is too much text on each page.
However, I am looking forward to starting this new project soon. Take care, Birgit
Hi Suzy!
Can you share what backing fabric you used for the warm and cool horizon quilts? I love the florals on it, thank you for another amazing quilt pattern! Baby Jojo is the sweetest 🙂
Of course! They are both part of the Velvet collection by Amy Sinabaldi for Art Gallery Fabrics. I believe they are both called Firefly just in different colors.
Are you planning to share the fabrics used in the New Horizons in warm fat quarters? Or will you release more fabric bundles? The one with the purple, pink, orange, gold. The colors are so pretty!
Hi Leah! You can purchase that kit and see all the colors used in the quilt at this link: https://suzyquilts.com/shop/new-horizons-quilt-kit-warm/
Happy quilting!
Hi Laura,
With the quilt kit no longer being available, can you share the warm quilt colors? Thanks!
Hello there! I’m just starting this quilt and how do I know what colour matches what number or letter? New quilter here so forgive the question.
Hello hello and welcome! Pages 2 and 3 of the pattern list out Colors 1-20 as well as the cuts that correspond to each letter. The diagram on page 4 shows the placement of each color. If you find yourself scratching your head wondering what to do next, I suggest checking out the sew along posts for this quilt. Over the summer we made the New Horizons quilt pattern together as an online community over a 6-week period of time. Each week had its own helpful blog post. Here’s a link to the first one – https://suzyquilts.com/new-horizons-quilt-sew-along-week-1-pick-fabric/ You can find all of our sew along posts in the Sew Along tab under Blog.
Is it possible to get the color listing for the warm palette? I don’t see a kit available anymore. Thanks!
