Introducing Suzy Quilts 50wt Thread for Aurifil

Suzy Quilts 50wt Thread for Aurifil Threads - Italian luxury cotton thread

Would you consider yourself a lover of luxurious things? Personally, I've never cared about designer labels or items marketed as "luxury," but high quality sewing supplies? Uh oh. I'm in trouble. I love everything about sewing and because I want my finished projects to not only last but look amazing, I've started allowing myself small sewing luxuries, like this premium Italian-made 100% cotton thread by Aurifil.

Last year we launched the Suzy Quilts 8wt Evolve thread collection. In my second collection with Aurifil we have taken twelve of those colors and created a 50wt series in a beautiful muted rainbow — perfect for machine sewing and quilting.

The Wildflower 50wt thread collection includes 12 large spools of 100% cotton thread — that's 1422 yd (1300 mm)! Just like the Evolve thread collection, Wildflower is designed to coordinate with all Suzy Quilts fabric, especially the new Wildflower Wovens.

How to Use 50wt Thread

50wt thread probably comes with less of a learning curve than 8wt thread because chances are you've already been using it. This is my recommended weight of thread when piecing a quilt. It is also versatile enough to use when machine quilting too.

In the Wildflower quilt below (yes, Wildflower is now a fabric collection, thread collection, and quilt pattern) I used both collections of thread in the quilting. For more information on how to mix machine quilting with hand quilting, check out this post - How I learned to Hand Quilt

Q&A with Aurifil about the 50wt Wildflower Collection

You can find the full Q&A on the Aurifil blog here.

Q: This new set features large spools of Aurifil 50wt thread. Why was it important to you to feature this versatile thread weight

A: My quilting process always starts on the sewing machine piecing a quilt top with 50wt Aurifil thread. Although it’s not necessary to match thread to the fabric when piecing, it is a good idea to sew with thread that blends with the colors of a quilt.

This Wildflower collection is a lovely muted rainbow assortment and works seamlessly with all five of my fabric collections. Even if quilters sew with other fabrics, these colors are subtle enough that they have chameleon-like qualities and look good with many shades.

I also typically opt for 50wt thread when machine quilting. During that process, it is important to choose colors that coordinate with the fabric. Even though there are just 12 hues in the collection, I have no doubt that these threads will offer ample opportunities to play and bring beauty to the quilting process.

Q: When you first sent this title through to me, we talked about the song Wildflower – both the Tom Petty original AND the Wailin’ Jennys cover. Did music factor into your title when creating your Art Gallery fabric line or was the similarity it a happy coincidence?

A: Although I did listen to those beautiful songs while pulling colors for this collection, my inspiration came from me sister-in-law, Sarah, and her recent love of growing wildflowers. Every summer she tills up more of her yard and expands her wildflower garden. She makes bouquets as a fun hobby, and when complimented brushes it off like it’s no big deal, but she’s incredibly creative in this way!

I see a lot of quilters do this — they amaze me with their creativity but don’t see their skill as amazing. I hope this collection of thread emboldens sewists to step into creative confidence in an exciting and empowering way.

Q: If you could describe the Wildflower thread collection in three words, what would they be?

A: Can I pick just two words? Nature’s Rainbow

Q: Do you have a personal favorite color from the thread collection? If so, why does it resonate with you?

A: That is really tough, but if pressed, I’d say the dusty pink/purple hue that coordinates with my Signature Solid Thistle fabric. I love wearing that color and think it’s a really interesting shade that can take on the qualities of the colors surrounding it — making it perfect for machine quilting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this thread ethically made?

YES. Each spool is crafted in Milan, Italy. While there it undergoes 15 steps before it becomes a spool ready for use. All Aurifil thread is Oeko-Tex certified too! (Just like all Art Gallery Fabrics) This certification relates to how a product is processed, including things like dyes and finishes used. It means that Aurifil threads are certified free of harmful chemicals and are completely safe for human use and those working in the factory have safe working conditions.

What type of cotton is used in this 50wt thread?

Aurifil is 100% Egyptian Cotton, grown in the MAKO region of Egypt on the river Nile.

Does this 50wt thread have a sheen?

Oh heck yes! Achieving the perfect sheen was a big part of our back and forth process. This thread is mercerized, which is a process that not only strengthens the thread, but also provides it with a beautiful sheen.

Does this 50wt thread create lint in my sewing machine?

Yep. It's a natural fiber, so when under intense friction (like in a sewing machine) it will create lint. That's normal and easy to resolve. I recommend getting in the habit of cleaning your sewing machine every 3-4 bobbins. If you ever have a stitch issue, giving your machine a nice clean and re-thread is a good place to start.

I can’t wait to (hopefully) get my hands on some of this. Quick question: Do all of these colors also coordinate with Evolve collection?

I ask because I am taking a hand piecing class this summer in Oregon, and I’ve picked your collection of Evolve in Fat quarters. I’m so eager to learn and expand my knowledge by this Improv hand piecing class. The instructor recommends a 50 wt thread, and I’d love if some of these colors match with Evolve collection. 💕

    • Suzy Williams says:

Yes, Yes, and YES! Both of my thread collections with Aurifil coordinate with all Suzy Quilts fabric. So whether you are picking up the 8wt Evolve collection or this 50wt Wildflower collection, you can use them seamlessly with Evolve fabric and even Duval, Signature Solids, Wildflower Wovens, and Slow Summer. The quilt seen here uses Wildflower Wovens and Signature Solids.
