The Best Sewing Cabinet for Quilting & Crafting

Exactly one year ago today a burly man named Mike gave me a call to let me know that his truck was parked in front of my house. With the same excitement as my toddler on Christmas morning, I bounded to my front door.

Even though it was exceptionally warm for May and Mike had just driven three hours from Wisconsin, he didn't bat an eye or look concerned when I told him that we would be hauling this sewing cabinet up two flights of stairs to my attic studio.

And by "we" I 100% meant "he" because I was only four weeks postpartum from having a C-section. I do think Mike could have moved this cabinet by himself, but lucky for him my husband was working from home at the time and could help with the process.

Once all of the pieces were in my studio, Mike finished assembling the cabinet and even gave me a few tips on using it. He then casually informed me that he had made this cabinet in his own home workshop! How cool—Mighty Mike, indeed!

Why I Love My Sewing Cabinet

Are you ready for those deets? I am convinced the best sewing cabinet for quilting and crafting is the Quilters Cabinet made by Tracey's Tables. My favorite features include:

WHEELS! It's on wheels.

That may sound like a small thing, but it's HUGE during the quilting process. Sometimes I want my table in the middle of my sewing room so I can easily jump from cutting to sewing to pressing. Other times I need floor space for laying out fabric and making quick decisions on block placement. The wheels on this cabinet allow me to move it anywhere I need so I can access the space as I need it.

Above is the Holiday Party quilt pattern, available in the shop! You can see the making of this quilt in the Holiday Party sew along.

Drop-down folding leaves.

These drop-down folding leaves are my second favorite feature and probably what many of you will appreciate the most. This cabinet can become compact or very very large. Large enough for me to quilt a throw quilt comfortably.

It's big, but not bulky.

This cabinet is the perfect combination of minimal design while still being large enough for me to work on big sewing projects. It's sturdy enough that it never shakes or wobbles while I'm speed sewing through my chain piecing, but it's incredibly easy to roll around. Like, I have done it one-handed while holding a baby.

Above I am quilting the New Horizons quilt.

There's a lot of storage space.

I personally do not need a lot of storage space in my sewing cabinet, but these drawers are really nice for keeping my machine quilting notions and sewing machine feet. I keep extra bobbins, needles, oil, and snips in the top drawer, machine cleaning supplies in the middle drawer, and all of my extra feet and machine attachments in the bottom drawer.

The custom Sew Steady insert is a must.

Tracey's Tables does not make the actual insert and it is an additional $89, but it's awesome and very very worth it. I had a sewing cabinet before with a wooden insert and although that worked great, I really like the clear one for my BERNINA because of its front-loading bobbin.

Being able to see that part of my machine without lifting it up and out of the insert makes changing the bobbin or doing a quick lint brush so quick and easy.

One of the main perks of using a sewing cabinet is that it allows your machine to rest inside so you have a seamless workspace. Below you can see how easy it is for me to sew my stitch and flip blocks in the New Horizons quilt pattern by using some quilter's tape as a guide.

And here is a view from the back so you can see the other half of my attic studio. My cutting table is a kitchen island from Crate & Barrel. The three men it took to move that piece of furniture most definitely DID roll their eyes and sigh when I told them it would be going up three flights of stairs.

They were quite confused why I would have my kitchen in the attic. My husband has told me many times that if we ever move my cutting table won't be coming with us. (But friends, between you and me, we both know who would win that argument.)

Table: French Kitchen 72" Large Kitchen Island from Crate & Barrel—I have found kitchen islands to work great as cutting tables because they are the right height and usually have some storage underneath.

Cutting mat: This is a large clear Rhino cutting mat I had custom cut by an online company that no longer exists. The grid you see is a white sheet that sits underneath the mat.

Bins: Charcoal Nordic Storage Baskets With Handles from The Container Store

No matter where you sew or what you sew on, it's important to create a space that allows you to be creative and have a comfortable workflow. That can be in a college dorm doom, communal dining room, studio apartment kitchen hallway, basement storage space, guest bedroom... oh wait, no I'm just listing all of my past sewing spaces. ha!

Basically what I'm saying is, that you don't need a designated sewing studio or the best sewing cabinet to enjoy sewing and make beautiful quilts. You do need some basic tools and a spark of creativity. Thank goodness that second one is readily available to us all. 😉

Now let's hear from you! Do you have a sewing cabinet you love? What is your sewing space like? Have you ever sewn in a dorm before? Because I can tell you from experience that if you don't have a VERY laid-back roommate it won't go well.

I have a sewing room – my daughter’s bedroom. I had a designer help design the space. Originally we had Ikea countertops to serve as counter around the room. As the room is really small, I wanted to have a standing desk that would answer both needs: cutting at the right height (I have a very long torso and usual standard countertop at 36” is not high enough for me) and sewing, without taking too much space. And the desk can go as low as 24,5” to as high 50,2”. I still don’t have enough space to really spread out my quilts when I want to sandwich them. So I use my standing desk, and roll the top, batting and backing on some 1/2 X 2” painted wood strips.

Thank you for all the info! Oh how I wish I could afford this set-up. It inspires me to search for and/or create other options!

  3. Kim Jackson says:

I have not wanted to planned on buying a sewing table. They are so bulky and expensive so I have not even been looking for one. BUT stop the presses! When I saw the Quilter’s Table, I instantly knew this was right sewing table for me.

  4. Libby says:

I loved this article. Spurred me on to rearrange my current set up to work more efficiently. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. mts says:

Your space is so inspiring, bright, sooo neat and uncluttered! Tell me, how is the climate in your studio? Do you have heat and a/c, do you need heat and a/c? My ‘workroom’ is on the top floor, too and part of my floor clutter problem is the the portable heater and cooling fan. I use the c. 1920 Singer sewing cabinet of my grandmother’s for my sewing platform. It works; I’m just a hobby crafter.

  6. Cynthia says:

Thank you for sharing this information. That table looks ideal in all the ways you described. But the plexiglass insert, is that custom cut for your machine and table? As it is a seamless fit. Lovely sewing attic!

  7. Shirl says:

Nice information on a table I would really like to have but you didnt give us the name of the table itself? Or should we just call them, tie up their phone lines on a price we may or may not purchase on said phone call? I love you Suzy but help us out here.

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Shirl! You can find both the name of Suzy’s sewing cabinet and a direct link to it under the heading “Why I Love My Sewing Cabinet” in the post 🙂

  8. Stéphanie says:

Thanks you for sharing your studio with your wonderful table.
I sew in a little space, on an old hairdresser . I ´m looking forward for a bigger table

  9. Charlene says:

What a GREAT studio. I would call it “my happy place” I just recently inherited my mom’s sewing table. It is not a Tracy table but another company, so now my mom quilts with me on a daily basis❤️🧵. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Sue Petracek says:

What is the height of your table? I’m short and need a lower than average sewing height to keep from hunching up my shoulders.

    • Cristy Clark says:

Since Tracey’s Tables custom make all their cabinets, they can make any height adjustments you need. I have the exact same setup as Suzy does, except the height of the table is taller (like counter height). I also added a little fold out wing on the right side of my sewing machine because I keep alot of stuff there. It’s absolutely perfect. And Mike came from Wisconsin to Chattanooga to deliver it.

    • Debra says:

Sue, me too. I have one of those tables that you manually adjust with those big round handles screw things and I have it quite low. It’s just more comfortable for me to sew like that.

  11. Kami says:

For anyone that has this table or similar, do you find the outlet plug add-on necessary/convenient/worth it? Or would it be just as easy to use an extension cord or power strip if we need more space between the table and an outlet?

    • Janet Richardson says:

I have a similar cabinet and I have a surge protector power strip with a long cord that I use and it’s under the cabinet and out of my way.

    • Katherine Gould says:

Kami, I did get the outlet plug add-on but I do not find it necessary at all because it is so easy to roll the cabinet near to any outlet or use a heavy duty extension cord with a surge suppressor on the floor under the cabinet. I also did not get the hydraulic lift that can lower the machine inside the cabinet this time around. I got it on my first Tracey ‘s cabinet but found that I never once used it because I never put my sewing machine away. I used some of the saved $$ to get the extra set of drawers.

  12. Vivian says:

Love your studio as well as the sewing table ! I have a budget set up – done by my carpenter. She took my existing teak desk together with my sewing machine and made a drop down shelf for it. Space around it is filled with styrofoam as an insert. I have a top loading bobbin, so this set up works just fine. It doesn’t look pretty, but it is so much better for my back !

  13. Janet Richardson says:

I lucked out and got 2 old Berninas in 2 Koala cabinets similar to yours for $800 on Facebook marketplace! When I traded in one of the Berninas on a new Bernina I just had to order a new clear plastic custom insert. I would not trade those tables for anything! I love having my machine inset as it makes quilting so much easier!

  14. Linda says:

I heartily recommend Tracy’s Tables. Mine is 10 years old-used daily and in great shape. Mike put my drawers on my right side instead of left. Purchased in Houston-shipped to Montana. Great small business to work with.

  15. Carie says:

I have sewn in a dorm room before! Thankfully my roommates didn’t get too annoyed at me for sewing late at night 😂 I had a small foldable table that I set my machine on, and I actually still use that table today in my apartment. I would love to have a bigger sewing table one day!

  16. Katherine Gould says:

I am so glad someone finally gave this wonderful small business and their custom designed sewing cabinets a shout-out! I had the exact one you picture built for me in 2009. I had it shipped to Tucson AZ and used it happily until I gave it to my daughter (sob). This year I ordered another one with some even more wonderful features–two roll out sets of shallow drawers beneath it so I can move them around and use the tops of them too. Mike personally delivered it to Asheville, NC for me and set it up. It is even more perfect than my first one, cost less delivered and set up than ANY big corporate sewing cabinet, is made of much higher quality materials and custom fit to my machine and has a custom height of 28″ (I am short). It rolls like a dream and I can move it around depending on lighting in my room and convenience to other pieces of furniture. They make many different sizes and configurations from quite small to large enough to lay out a king size quilt, all pictured on their website. You can talk to Mike himself if you call on phone. I believe he has been building sewing tables/cabinets for 25 years! Every day I use it and thank my lucky stars that I found their company!. I paid full price and received no compensation for this review. In fact Mike did not even ask me to review the cabinet or mention it at all. Check it out, no matter your budget or size of your space. I can’t praise my cabinet enough.

  17. Barb says:

I love those sewing cabinets by Tracy’s tables, but it’s not in the budget. What I’d really like is someone to cut a hole in my existing table and build a recessed shelf for the machine and get the plexiglass insert. Anyone have any suggestions? I believe my current surface is melamine. Where do you get the insert?

  18. Jeanne says:

Thank’s for sharing about Tracy’s Tables. I just ordered my table yesterday! It will be great to have the option for a bigger table to quilt on. Can’t wait!!

  19. Judy says:

Gorgeous!!! My room for sewing is a small bedroom with carpet and I’m lucky to have it, but I love what you’ve done in your space. Is it really always that neat and tidy???? I would LOVE that to, just waiting on elves to get mine cleaned up.
Thanks for the post and what a great, calming place to create!

  20. Jenny says:

I love this post! I just bought a SewEzi which I love so far and expanded the area using a collapsible plastic banquet table from Lowe’s that is the exact same hight. I have dreams of having a setup like yours one day, but for now I’m feeling pretty good. I actually started out quilting when I was 19 and living in my VW! There was very limited space in the bus, but whenever I stopped anywhere with a clean floor, I would roll out my supplies and quilt on the floor. I sat crosslegged, using my knee to run the pedal. Those where the days!

  21. Kathryn Sterngold says:

Please tell me how troublesome is taking out your B770QE bobbin that is now under the clear shield and under the table every time you need to change bobbins, oil (which is very frequently) and clean it?

    • Suzy Williams says:

The front portion of the cabinet is open so it’s no trouble at all. I don’t have to lift the machine out. I can just reach in and grab it. When it comes time to clean I like to lift the Sew Steady clear plexi top off so I can see better, but that’s really easy too.

  22. Elizabeth Rice says:

Like you, Suzy, I love my B770QE!! It seems like the knee lift feature wouldn’t necessarily work when the machine is in the cabinet. Is that correct? Are there any other cost/ benefits you’ve noticed??

  23. Susan C Lasky says:

Love the set up. Question?? Would you know the wall and trim paint colors and manufacturer?? We are painting our 130 year old living room and trying to get this contrast….we have failed and still trying. This is exactly the wall and trim color we are trying to obtain. Thank you. Love following you!!

    • Suzy Williams says:

Hmmm…Well the trim is just basic White and I thought the color was called Linen, but it would have come from Benjamin Moore and they don’t have a color called that. Oh dear, I’m sorry I don’t know!

  24. Helen M. Thomas-Haney says:

Do the wheels lock? Is the cabinet sturdy enough for cutting on? I need one table/cabinet for cutting, sewing (by hand), and basting.

    • Liz says:

Una observación: para optimizar el uso de la luz natural mientras cose, ésta ha de venir por la izquierda y detrás (si eres diestra).
      ¡Todo lo demás está hermoso!

  25. KHM says:

This quilting sewing table is exactly what I am looking for…except for one thing. As I sit facing my machine, I need something to my immediate left and behind me to support the bulk of medium to large quilts to prevent dragging or having the weight actually hanging down from the needle, creating even more drag. In the 7th photo of your article, you show what looks like the set-up I need. How did you support that quilt so it was nice and flat not only to your left, but behind you to the side??

    • Laura Hopper says:

The quilt is just being held up for the picture — you could head to your local sewing machine dealer to ask them if they have any tables that match the description of what you need!

    • Laura Hopper says:

The chair is from CB2, but it’s about 12 years old so it won’t be available now. Best of luck finding something similar!

  26. Terri Schleve says:

I love your table. Have a couple of questions. Does the cut out for the drop in allow for different size machines? I currently have a smaller machine, but would like to get one with a larger flatbed at some point. Want to make sure any cabinet I buy would accommodate both.
Also, what type of shipping did Traceys Tables use? I am aways afraid of damage to something like this when ordering online.
    Was assembly included with purchase?

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Terri! Your question about different sized machines is best asked to Tracy’s Tables, they’ll be able to give you a definitive answer. Tracy’s Tables delivered and assembled Suzy’s table themselves (you can read more about that under the subheading The Best Sewing Cabinet for Quilting & Crafting in this article)!

  27. Julie says:

I’m really considering this table after your glowing review! I see that they assembled it for you, but did you have to pay extra for that? I tried contacting the company with that question and haven’t been able to get a response! Many thanks!

    • Laura Hopper says:

Hi Julie! I’m sorry you are having a hard time getting in touch with them! We recommend you keep trying and check with them — we don’t want to give you any out of date information. Best of luck!

  28. Joy Skibo says:

I bought this same sewing table from Tracey’s Tables that you have. I did a lot of research before settling on this one. It is true that Mike and Hannah deliver the table from Wisconsin. It is beautifully made and quite sturdy, never shakes when running my Juki at high speed. Got inserts for both of my machines, very happy.

  29. Donna Noll says:

I have this same table! I got it about 15 years ago. I love it! I had a smaller machine back then but he made the cutout for a larger machine so when I upgraded it was large enough. All I had to do was order another insert from Sew Steady which was very easy.

  30. Sherolyn Merrick says:

Just requested information from Tracey’s Tables for a sewing cabinet that will accommodate my Luminaire XP1. Any info comparing Arrow Sewing cabinet to Traceys Tables would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Love your posts.

    • Laura Hopper says:

Wonderful! We haven’t tried Arrow sewing cabinets, but you could try reaching out to a local dealer that may have one in stock to see it in person!

  31. Lyn Jackson says:

Tracey’s Tables are the best. I bought mine 10 years ago and it is everything I want. It is versatile, flexible, and has held up beautifully. I had Mike add a second set of drawers on a L side. So glad I did. The L on my left holds the excess quilt package as I quilt. Mike is awesome.

  32. Jennifer says:

Hi I just seen your pin and love the sewing cabinet. I have seen in earlier post you said name of cabinet and place to buy it is under the title. I seen were you started to give details but that other stuff was list and not the cabinet. Could you please post here the name of cabinet and where to get it? Or how to get ahold of Mike so he could help me.

  33. Pat Kampmeyer says:

my exact table -Tracy’s tables are made a few miles from our house ,it was a surprise birthday/ Anniv. gift from my husband along with a cutting table about 14 yrs ago . LOVE LOVE LOVE IT . &its still like new .

  34. Debbie says:

Love the sewing table. I have a similar one but it’s getting old. thank you for the resource. Also. would you please tell me about the fabric and pattern of the quilt on the floor under It’s Got Wheels. all your fabric and the fabric you use are gorgious. Thank you

  35. Karen La Du says:

    Great article, thanks.
I am looking to move my sewing machine from my shared studio space to the designated “studio” corner of my apartment and this could be great but I want a cabinet that lets me stash the machine. Any ideas? The old fashioned cabinet I had in my childhood home allowed you to tip the machine back into the cabinet and have a flat top once again.
