It's time to tackle the most popular quilt size in our fabric inspiration series — throw quilt patterns! Because throw quilts are by far the most commonly made quilt size, this post is super-sized. Get ready to see over 50 different mockups and finished throw quilt patterns.
Fabric is printed seasonally so once the new fabric season rolls around, it can be hard to find certain prints. If the fabric shown in the mockups (which are mostly solids that are continuously made) is still available, we have listed each fabric shown so that you can get your shopping list ready. So what are you waiting for? Let's make some throw quilt patterns!

The Suzy Quilts Fabric Inspiration Series
Over the course of five blog posts, the SQ team will guide you through some of our most beloved patterns in different color variations including lists of the real fabric colors used in each mockup.
Trending patterns!
The mockups are all brought to you by Sarah Holst of the shop Sarah Made, who has made kits for some of the mockups that will be available for a limited time, and from Suzy herself. Some of the mockups below by Suzy were previously only available in Suzy Quilts patterns and are being shown on our website for the first time!
The series will be five posts long and cover each common quilt size:
- Baby Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Throw Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Twin Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- Queen Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
- King Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
Note that fabric requirements for all of our patterns, including the quilt patterns included in this post, can be found on that pattern's page in our shop. Just scroll down and you'll see the fabric requirements as well as every blog post related to that pattern!
If a kit is available for a mockup shown in the post, it will be linked in the bullet points above the mockup image. If no kit is available, there will be no kit listing.

How To Select Your Own Fabric Colors
If you're an adventurous quilter who is interested in creating your very own color mockups, we have some great suggestions!
- Color Cards: Buying a color card from your favorite fabric manufacturer gives you a small swatch of each fabric so you can see the colors even more truly than they appear on a computer screen. You can use those swatches to select a quilt made entirely out of solids or even match up prints with coordinating solids. Plus don't miss our free tutorial for how to turn a color card into magnets to make color selection even easier!
- PreQuilt: Have you heard of this fantastic web-based app? PreQuilt uses colors from real fabric companies, including prints, so you can create your own mockups and see exactly how your will look when finished. We have exclusively partnered with PreQuilt and each pattern in our catalog is available as a digital coloring page, as are all of Suzy's print and solid fabric collection. Check out our PreQuilt blog post for video tutorials about how to make your own digital quilt mockups.
- Coloring Pages: Speaking of coloring pages, each Suzy Quilts pattern comes with a blank coloring page that can be printed and colored in by hand. You can even download most of our coloring pages without buying the patterns in this blog post!
- Sew Along Blog Posts: Did you know that the first week of every Suzy Quilts sew along focuses on selecting fabric for your quilt? Even if you've missed a sew along, you can still see all of the posts, including the Week 1 posts about fabric selection, by heading to the Sew Along section of our website.
- Local Quilt Shops: The staff of your local quilt shop would love to help you select fabrics for a quilt! Bring them an inspiration image or even just an idea, along with a picture of the pattern and the fabric requirements, and pretty soon you'll have your own quilt kit made with your new pals at the quilt shop 🙂
- Suzy's Ultimate Guide to Picking Fabric For a Quilt: Subscribers to The Cutting Table can read a two-part series of articles by Suzy that takes a deeper dive into the creative process and color theory as it relates to fabric and quilts. About Throw Quilt Patterns
Throw quilt patterns are the most popular quilt size. If you're buying a quilt kit, chances are pretty good that the standard size you're getting is a throw. This size is big enough for adults to use but not too big that they're hard to make on a domestic sewing machine.
And who doesn't love having a throw quilt? They're perfect to snuggle under while reading a book. If you're sick and spending all day parked on the couch binging your favorite shows, a throw quilt can help you feel more comfortable. And they're easy gifts for loved ones! While we always recommend asking someone if they'd like a handmade quilt as a gift before making something for them, throw quilts can be meaningful and cherished belongings.
Our Ultimate Guide to Quilt Sizes says that a standard throw quilt size is 50" x 65", but that doesn't mean you can't play around with the size. You'll notice many different throw sizes in this very blog post! That's because some people prefer more of a lap quilt that is meant to only cover their legs, while other people may want a quilt that covers them from their shoulders down to their toes. Quilt sizes are general suggestions to get you towards the right approximate size to fit an adult.
Let's start looking at mockups for throw quilt patterns! You'll see inspiration photos, digital mockups, and even some color comparisons of the same pattern so you can see how small changes can make a big difference in the finished quilt.

Shining Star — Pompeii
Why we love it: Shining Star is one of the most fun patterns in the Suzy Quilts catalog. It combines improv with precision to create star blocks that will truly be unique to you. In fact, we love this pattern so much that we are going to walk you through four different color versions so you can see how small changes can make a big impact! The first example, Pompeii, uses the multi-color block instructions. Each block has a dark and light color and the background is a dark brown. The dark background helps all of the lighter colors pop.
Throw size: 69" x 69"
Mockup by: Suzy Quilts
Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids collection.
- Colors (the throw size requires 18 fat quarters, they are listed here in the pairings shown below):
- Queen Bee and Desert Dunes
- Ginger and Parisian Blue
- Cotton Candy and Verve Violet
- Shrimpy and Hydrangea
- Lavender Water and Wisteria
- Glacier and Haze
- Sugar Plum and Thistle
- Blossomed and Dried Roses
- Periwinkle and Poppy
- Background: Truffle
Shining Star — Apple of My Eye
Why we love it: In Suzy's Apple of My Eye version, she has added a surprising pop of color to the limited-color version of Shining Star. By adding red to the center of each block as well as the central squares connecting the sashing, this quilt has a splash of added personality. It also harkens back to traditional log cabin quilts which used red in the center to represent the warm hearth of the home.

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids.
- Color 1: Icy Mint
- Color 2: Ocean Fog
- Red Accent Color: Weathered Brick
Shining Star — Looks Like Rain
Why we love it: Looks Like Rain is a sophisticated and subtle low-volume quilt, meaning there is minimal contrast between the colors. Using soft neutrals together is a great starting point for a low-volume quilt, like the white and putty colors shown below. Looking at the other Shining Star examples, you can see that this one is the most minimal.

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids.
- Color 1: White Linen
- Color 2: Gentle Feather
Shining Star — Low-Key
Why we love it: And last, here's a version of Shining Star with a more traditional cream background. Each block uses a dark and light shade of the same color, giving it a cohesive look. And the cream background has a more subtle look than the dramatic dark background in the Pompeii version.

Fronds — Hotel Lobby
Why we love it: Fronds is one of our favorite types of patterns — it looks much harder than it is. Yes, there are curves. But the entire quilt is made using only one block! So after you've done a few of these blocks, you'll be confident. By the time the top is finished, you'll be a quilt curve pro! In Suzy's Hotel Lobby mockup, you can see that she chose black and cream for the central curves which draws your eye to them, emphasizing rows of circles.

Fronds — Duval Truffle
Why we love it: In Suzy's Duval Truffle version of Fronds, she uses a similar off-white but replaced the solid black with her Diamond Stripe in Truffle from the Duval fabric collection. It gives the circles a softer look and helps create a quilt that equally emphasizes each shape.
Throw size: 60" x 72"

Why we love it: Voyage is one of the most eye-catching patterns in our collection. The combination of half square triangle and half rectangle triangles (they're easier than you think, we promise!) makes a shape that's unlike anything else in the SQ catalog. Plus the throw size is very generously sized, so it's perfect if you're tall. Plus it comes with both multi-color and limited color instructions!

Get the New Horizons quilt pattern here, and read this blog post to learn how to make a double gauze version like the quilt shown above!
Why we love it: New Horizons is another entry in our harder than it looks series 🙂 The whole quilt is made using just two blocks — half square triangles and "stitch and flip" blocks. The trick is that they are set on point, which means they appear diagonally instead of straight.

Get the Maypole quilt pattern here and use holiday prints to make some Christmas cheer!
Why we love it: We want to shout our love of Maypole off the rooftops! Let's hire a sky writer to write "I Heart Maypole" or ye olde fashioned towne crier to hype this beloved pattern at an actual Renaissance Faire maypole! This pattern is our most popular by far and we have never seen a bad version. Every color combination just works with this design! But a beautifully monochromatic version is right up our alley 🙂

Thrive — Sunset On the Water
Why we love it: Thrive is another quilt pattern that looks great in any fabric, particularly solids. Let's start by looking at Suzy's mockup called Sunset On the Water. The chevron shaped blocks transition from a light pink to a deep blue as you look down the quilt, with a very dark blue background.
Throw size: 64" x 67"

Thrive — Vino and a View
Why we love it: Next, let's look at another mockup by Suzy that shares similar colors but has a completely different look. Starting with a soft pink, the chevron shaped blocks down to shades of blue. The Sunset On the Water mockup above uses highly saturated colors, while the Vino and a View mockup below uses dusty colors with a light neutral background that all add more softness to the quilt. Color 10 (the squares) also alternate using different fabrics from Colors 1-9 which makes this quilt more dynamic.

Get the Sugar POP quilt pattern here.
Why we love it: Sugar POP has an undeniable retro vibe. So pairing this pattern with bright and exciting colors makes it, well...POP! The thin stripes on this pattern work great with solids or small-scale prints like blenders. Note that in the original pattern, Color 2 is used in all quadrants whereas in the mockup below, there are eight separate colors used.

Get the Starling quilt pattern here and use different shades of the same color to make an ombré version like the finished quilts shown above. Get the full tutorial and list of fabrics in this post - Ombré Starling Quilt Pattern Variation.
Starling — Foraged
Why we love it: Starling is a clever pattern. The full star column in the center of the quilt gradually changes towards the end as points on the star are removed. It creates a very fun illusion where your eye can focus both on the star shapes and the strings of diamonds created down the quilt. In the Foraged mock below, Suzy used blues, greens, and oranges with a deep brown background.

Starling — Octopus Teacher
Why we love it: Now let's look at a similar Starling mockup. In Octopus Teacher, Suzy has also used primarily greens and blues, just like in Foraged. However, in Octopus Teacher, she keeps it more monochromatic by using a green background. Just because they use similar colors does not mean they have the same look!

Get the Grow quilt pattern here.
Why we love it: Grow is a modern take on a traditional log cabin quilt. Pieced using similar techniques, the addition of stripes in this quilt adds new dimension. Grow is also a quilt with surprising depth. The design creates a visual trick that makes it appear that the center is deeper than the borders.

Nordic Triangles — Black and White
Why we love it: And here's what Nordic Triangles looks like in black, grey, and white. It's a minimal dream! A simple switch from bright and colorful colors to dark neutrals makes a huge difference. In this version of Nordic Triangles, you'll use three fabrics instead of five. To calculate the fabric requirements, you'll add Color 1 and Color 3 together for the grey fabric, then add Color 2 and Color 4 together for the black fabric. The background requirements are the same.
Throw size: 54" x 72"
Mockup by: Suzy Quilts
Mockup fabrics:
- Color 1 and Color 3: Mystic Grey
- Color 2 and Color 4: Deep Black
- Background: White Linen
Why we love it: The streamlined design of Minimal Triangles is sleek and dazzling. And the mockup created by Suzy below shows why. This version creates a rainbow by using different colors for the triangle rows. For the triangle fabric requirements, use 1/8 yd. or 1 fat sixteenth each of 8 colors and cut 12 triangles each using Template B. The dark background helps the colorful triangles stand out.

Get the Gather quilt pattern here.
Why we love it: Throw the traditional quilt grid out the window and make something totally different! Gather is made entirely using the versatile and beloved half square triangle. But those half square triangles are sewn into rows and pieced diagonally. The black background on the Vintage Vase mockup by Suzy gives Gather a moody vibe, like a forest at night.

Get the Fly Away quilt pattern here.
Why we love it: Fly Away is a beauty of a quilt. The empty space which gradually leads to a flock of blocks can hold wonderful personal meanings. Maybe you have a group of friends like a quilt guild or a book club that grew over time. Or perhaps you've worked to grow your family. Fly Away is a peaceful look at growth that looks beautiful in a variety of colors, particularly solids. In the mockup made by Suzy below, the white background creates a strong focus on the colorful blocks.

Why we love it: And in the Fly Away mockup below, also by Suzy, you can see how the background and foreground are flipped. Instead of using lots of bright colors for the blocks, she has a bold blue for the quilt's background.

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts
Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids collection.
