Tuesday Mornings with Suzy

Tuesday-Mornings-with-Suzy-Quilts

A few months ago I put a call out via Instagram stories that I was opening up time in my schedule every Tuesday morning to chat with you. Quilting, business, hair styling, dogs – anything you wanted to talk about, I was going to set it up. Two people. Two 30-minute appointments. Every Tuesday morning. No catch.

I did this on a whim and was instantly anxious that it had been a huge mistake. So many things could go badly! After my first day of calls I was patting myself on that back for making such a splendiferous split-second decision. Chatting with you is fun! Over the weeks I got to talk with other creatives all over the world about their dreams, plans, businesses, quilts, and current projects.

Why Tuesday Mornings?

I got the idea in my head after listening to an interview with the magnificent Maya Angelou. She said,

"When you learn, teach. When you get, give."

The more I thought about this quote, the more it struck me that she did not say, "When you learn it all, teach. When you get it all, give." I have a tendency to count myself out when it comes sharing knowledge and advice. I can pretty easily convince myself that I don't know enough to give advice and I haven't learned enough to teach.

Have you ever had that thought? You know that you know sooome things, but you're not an "expert," so it holds you back from teaching or sharing.

Well, no longer am I letting the absence of knowledge deter me from sharing my presence of knowledge. I've been quilting for almost 17 years. I worked to create my own freelance graphic design business for 2 years, and I've been plugging away at growing Suzy Quilts, my textile design business, since the start of 2016.

Over all of that time, various people have come in and out of my life and taught me valuable lessons. Yes, I've had to figure many things out on my own...and usually the hard way, but I would not be the person I am without a few select people taking time and investing in my drive and creativity.

What's the Catch?

No catch. This is my service to you, my fellow creative. I want you to feel empowered, energized, and excited about learning and growing. You're not alone – I'm here with you!

Yes, this is not an efficient way of using my time. I know. lol! Yes, instead of chatting with you one-on-one I should probably dedicate that time to hacking away at that ebook I've been trying to write for the past 6 months. But, there's something about that one-on-one time that's really nice, right?

Signing up for Tuesday Mornings

If you are interested in setting up a Tuesday morning appointment with me, here are the terms:

  • It's only on Tuesdays.
  • There are two slots every week: 8:30 - 9:00 and 9:00 - 9:30 CST
  • It's not personal. It's business. And by "it's not personal" I mean, I'm not your therapist. We can commiserate about how unfair it is to start graying at 25 and how diet ice creams seem to be getting worse, but outside of that, let's keep it light.
  • Appointments are through Skype. Once our time is set up, I'll share my Skype username with you.
  • If you can't make your appointment, let me know ASAP and I will try to reschedule you. However, chances are, I won't be able to...but I'll try my best.

To get an appointment, leave a comment with a sentence or two about what you would like to chat about. I will try to schedule based on a first come first serve. Once you leave a comment, I will email you to set up an appointment.

Chat soon! xo

I love this idea!!! I am interested in making (and sharing) my own patterns but have kind of gotten stuck in a few places, would love some advice around that!!

Hello!! Pick me! I’m very new to quilting. After taking a class a few years ago, I decided last year to make 3 quilts for my mom and sisters. I hate reading directions so I usually just jump in and start creating. I would very much enjoy talking with you and learning tips and tricks for a beginner!

  3. Shannon Y. says:

I would love to chat about turning my grandparents’ shirts into a quilt and how to get quilts that have super well aligned blocks.

  4. Brittany says:

This is such a great opportunity! I’d love to chat about marketing a handmade business or how to take a quilt pattern I’ve purchased and make it my own.

  5. Abigail Kirkman says:

I would love the opportunity to talk with you! Topics I would be interested in discussing are turning your passion into a business mainly where to start/focus, who to reach out to and some good next steps. Thank you!

  6. Angela Coleman says:

I would love to chat! About anything quilt related really but mostly the biz side. I have a fairly successful Etsy shop making custom memory quilts but would like to add some more passive income if I can. Thanks for being so generous to our quilty community.

So happy to hear the first round of Tuesday mornings went well!! I’d love to learn more about social media from you! – & to prove how much I enjoy following you, my slap bracelet/pin holder arrived yesterday!!

Hellooo! I would love to chat about ALL things business (and some non-business fun stuff too…perhaps one day?!) 😉 Specifically, I would love to get your insights on marketing. You constantly amaze me with how you position your brand and I would appreciate getting your perspective on marketing initiatives I should consider using for my business.

  9. Shawna says:

Thanks so much for doing this Suzy! I would love to chat about your transition from graphic design to quilting, and the behind the scenes details of running your own creative business.

  10. Shayna says:

I’d love to chat with you about narrowing down the Giant List of Pretty Good Ideas into a decent Path to Focus On. I’d really love to get a sewing business off the ground this year but I’m a little at loose ends trying to focus (making quilts? Bags? Patterns?) and could really benefit from some guidance on how to get off the ground.

  11. Melanie Meacham says:

I am pretty new at quilting and I’m already obsessed!! I also love seeing your posts and watching your videos. You’re hilarious! I’d love to have a chance to talk to you about the ins and outs of starting up the business side of quilting, as well as machine quilting techniques and piecing!

  12. Brittany says:

Yes! I would love to chat with you. I just started a blog and an Etsy shop like not very long ago but my dream would to someday work with bigger companies doing sewing collaborations. I would love to dream up how I could make that possible. Because I have some ideas but I have no idea if I’m on the right track.

  13. Meredith says:

I would love to chat with you!! I have been quilting for about 4 years now mostly just for myself and making baby quilts for friends but I would really love to take it to the next level. I don’t really know the best way to get off the ground selling quilts or opening an etsy shop or what! I’m also moving soon and wanting to get a pup of my own, so obvi will need some advice there.

  14. Anna Mendenhall says:

Oh, Id love to chat! I have some advanced beginner questions for you. This is a really great thing to do, I know I would really appreciate it! Id love to make an appointment! 🙂

  15. Theresa says:

Talk to me about SEO? I can’t find a good source to learn about it without dropping major💰. And I’m like can you even learn about this if Google holds the keys…and is constantly changing the algorithm? 🤷‍♀️

  16. Christina says:

I’d love to pick your brain about how you started and what pieces you added along the way as you evolved into the “it” girl you are! You’ve built a wonderful brand!!

  17. Amie says:

I would love to chat about quilting and how you manage your time along with other parts of life. You put out a lot of Quilts. How do you decide where to spend your time? This is an exspensive hobby and I want to use my time more wisely and make the most of my time when I am sewing.

  18. Ali Moore says:

Ah! So many things! I wanna talk picking fabric, growing my quilting skills, picking a stitch pattern, working in heirloom pieces into modern quilts!

  19. Kylee Marshall says:

I’m just finishing up my first quilt! Ive caught the quilting bug and would love to talk about quilt composition. What goes in to picking the right fabrics? How about the right pattern to match the fabric? (Or fabric to match the pattern?? Ahh, I’m new at this.) Anyways, your quilts are beautifully composed and I want to step up my game from here on out in that department. You rock.

  20. Sarah L says:

This is so cool, thank you for sharing yourself with us! I would love to chat about Illustrator/Photoshop, design, fabric and business. And hear some of your one-liners!

Hi beautiful Suzy! I’m Abby, a quilter (awwwe yeah!), knitter, writer, and other crafty things ending in “er.” I would LOVE to chat with you about how you about your early days: were you scared to start quilting full-time? Is there anything you wish you’d do differently? How do I get over my fears to dive into the creative waters too? I love your personality, aesthetic, and Instagram stories. Always be you.

  22. Michele says:

I am an art teacher and I started a sewing club at my school last year during recess time, and I have been teaching my students to sew! They are learning all the basics! I shared a few of your pieces with my students and they absolutely LOVE your work, your process, and your mission! They loved scrappy too!
Would you be at all interested in skyping with my sewing club to share about your work as an artist, designer, sewer, quilter and business owner? My students would love to hear more about how you became interested in sewing, your textile design work, about scrappy, your sewing process, or how you run your business, or anything else you may want to share!
