Fronds Quilt Pattern & Baby Bundle

Hello lovelies! I'm so excited to tell you about our first official quilt pattern of 2024 — Fronds. It is a simple curves quilt pattern that I'm guessing you'll want to make at least a few times. Inspired by my latest fabric collection, Evolve, this quilt pattern uses only ONE quilt block design. How fantastic is that?

By playing up the positive and negative spaces created with two shapes, you will make a joyful quilt that looks like large tropical leaves. To make this one block you will cut two templates. I'll give you a couple supplies tips below so making this pattern multiple times will get easier and faster every time.

But a new quilt pattern isn't the only thing I want to tell you about today. I have NEWS! This year will look a little different for Suzy Quilts because instead of releasing four patterns — one per quarter, we are only releasing two — this Spring pattern and a Fall pattern.

To make these two patterns extra special, we are adding adoooorable occasion bundle options. And because I'm having a baby any day now, our first bundle option is....drumroll... all about babies! Surprised? 😉

Fronds & Fronds Pattern Baby Bundle

On March 28 you will be able to purchase the Fronds Quilt Pattern PDF or the Fronds Pattern Baby Bundle which will include:

  • Fronds Quilt Pattern in its entirety
  • Fronds Burp Cloths Pattern
  • Petal Ball Pattern + full video tutorial

Fronds Burp Cloths Pattern

Using the same templates from the Fronds Quilt Pattern, you will get fabric requirements, fabric recommendations, and step-by-step instructions on how to make unique burp cloths that coordinate with a Fronds quilt.

Each burp cloth has a center section that can be made from the same fabric as the rest of the burp cloth, or used as space for some personalized embroidery.

The SQ Team who put this pattern together is made up 100% of mamas, so we know firsthand that even though using cute baby supplies makes the job more fun, the season of burp cloths is a (hopefully) short one. With that in mind we made sure this pattern came together really quickly and allowed you to make multiples at the same time.

Picking Fabric for Your Burp Cloths

For our burp cloths, we couldn’t resist the allure of double gauze. Its softness and absorbency really make it a wonderful choice. If you are new to sewing with this substrate, and wondering where to buy it, there are lots of quilting shops that carry it.

We found this double gauze at the Etsy shop, 123 DIY Sewing and were really happy with the quality. If you want to make really fancy burp cloths, check out the fabric from one of my favorite designers, Nani Iro. She specializes in double gauze and they are all stunning.

However, you could also use regular quilting cotton, flannel, or a soft woven fabric too. Whether you choose to include a lining depends on the thickness of your fabrics and how well you expect them to absorb liquid.

For one of our samples, we left the lining out; for the others, we included another layer of double gauze for the lining. You could also use batting, fleece, flannel, or even an upcycled towel for the lining. If you want to quilt your burp cloths, plan to include a lining.

Petal Ball Pattern

In this pattern you get to use up your Fronds Quilt Pattern scraps! Who doesn't love doing that? When making a Fronds throw quilt, one of our sample makers discovered that she had lots of lovely petal shapes leftover. Hmmm...could something be made with those?

After some research and a lot of tinkering, we came up with these beautiful Petal Balls that are perfect for baby to roll, pinch, or grab while hanging. I also discovered that my three and five year-old kids like throwing and rolling them around the house!

Not only does this Petal Ball Pattern include what you need to make one, it also includes a 45-minute video tutorial showing every single step in the process. You're going to love making these!

Picking Fabric for Your Petal Ball

The Petal Ball pattern is designed to make use of the scraps created when cutting the templates for the Fronds quilt. You can make two petal balls from the scraps of a Fronds Baby quilt and three or more petal balls from the scraps of a Fronds throw quilt or larger! Note that your petal balls will be much scrappier than our samples, as you’ll be using all seven fabrics from the Fronds quilt instead of just two.

Fronds Quilt Pattern Fabric Requirements

The Fronds Quilt Pattern includes instructions for making Queen, Twin, Throw, and Baby quilt sizes. The break down of this quit is wonderfully straightforward. For each size you need the same amount of fabric for the "beach balls" or "checkers" and the same amount of fabric for the "fronds."

The following is a list of the fabrics for each size. This quilt design requires seven different fabrics for all sizes. To keep it simple, I am excluding binding and backing fabric. You can refer to the Fabric Requirements chart below to see those measurements.

This diagram shows you the quilt block breakdown. (Which as I was typing made me think of the Cell Block Tango. haha! Anyone else a musical theater fan?)

You can see that from just two templates, you make one block. Based on how you arrange your seven fabrics, you make a Fronds quilt. Ta-da! Easy breezy lemon squeezy.

Extra Fronds Supplies

With a pattern like this that uses templates, I suggest treating yourself to some vinyl template sheets so you can make long-lasting templates that can be used over and over again. This pattern is pretty simple and strait forward, so there are just a few added supplies I recommend getting.

Trace Creek Quilting did the longarm quilting. For more information on using extra cuddly fabric as backing, check out the post How To Use A Microfiber Blanket As Quilt Backing.

Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful Suzy and Team!! This is such a clever modern, update of the old Drunkard’s Path block. I love the colors and also the Baby Bundle items. You’re the best!

  2. Gail Kosturos says:

    Hi Suzy,
These quilts are fabulous!! I’m a fairly new quilter so the curves have me scared but I’m going to go for it anyway! I’ll let you know how it goes.
    Thanks for your inspiration!

  3. Johanna Underwood says:

Do you have recommendations for the material to use for the burp cloths? I am curious where you found coordinating colors in those fabrics since you would typically use a muslin rather than a quilting cotton.

    • Suzy Williams says:

Yes, and I should have mentioned that. These burp clothes were made with double gauze. I have purchased double gauze from a lot of different places, but these specifically were made from fabric I got from this Etsy shop – 123SewingDIY.

    • Suzy Williams says:

These templates aren’t exactly like standard Drunkard’s Path templates, so the finished look would be a bit different. You can compare the difference by laying your templates on top of a print out of these templates.

  4. SuzyShep says:

You have another winner here, Ms Quilts! I love the way you spin old time designs into something fresh and new. The soothing curves and optical illusion effects of this pattern are spellbinding. Every color version I have seen is appealing, and “different” looking one from the other, even though they are crafted from the same pattern. I will be opting for a kit on this project and am so looking forward to using your Evolve fabrics. The Cerulean colors/prints are so dreamy.
