The Voyage quilt pattern is now available! It includes instructions for a multi-color quilt as well as this subtle two-color quilt.
I personally love this design because it combines my two passions – graphic design and quilting. The Voyage quilt pattern fully encapsulates a modern aesthetic while strongly pulling from the rich heritage of traditional quilt blocks. Even though this quirky and geometric design appears to be one continues repeating pattern, it is block-based and uses simple shapes rotated and mixed together.
With only two different fabrics making up the quilt top, this kit is a wonderful way to grab the fabric you need and start sewing ASAP! The kit is NOW available in the Favorite Tools section of the SQ shop.
It will include (you guessed it) two fabrics:
- Art Gallery Fabrics PURE solids Gentle Feather
- Art Gallery Fabrics PURE solids Creme de la Creme
Can you spot the simple quilt shapes I'm referencing? Each Voyage block includes just three different shapes, rotated and used in different parts of the block. They are:
Trending patterns!
- Half square triangles
- Half rectangle triangles
- Squares
And that's it! And do you know the best part? If you are brand new to quilting, and feeling trepidation about setting off on this particular quilting voyage, I have filmed tutorial videos on each of these sections so you can rest assured that no part of this quilt will leave you confused or scratching your head.

Video Tutorials to Make a Two-Color Quilt with the Voyage Pattern
Video tutorial #1: How to make HSTs 4 at a time.
If you're new to making half square triangles, the first video tutorial that you may want to check out is how to sew your half square triangles, or HSTs. In this video I'll show you two different ways to sew your squares into HSTs as well as how to trim them.
Video tutorial#2: How to press seams in a quilt.
I don't cover pressing in the video above because we go over it in a lot of detail in a second video on pressing seams in a quilt. There is actually an entire blog post dedicated to this (How to Press Seams in a Quilt), but for just the video, click below.
Pressing is one of those underrated things in quilting that makes a really big difference. It's easy to rush through the process, but I bet you'll notice the difference in your accuracy if you take some extra time to press well.
Video tutorial #3: How to make half rectangle triangles.
Are half rectangle triangles, or HRTs, new to you? They aren't as common as HSTs, but when added to a quilt design they create a beautifully unique twist! The tutorial below shows how to start with two rectangles of fabric and cut, sew then trim them to be perfect little HRTs.
Can you find the HRTs in the two-color quilt below? Sometimes I think in this Voyage pattern they look like Pac-Men talking to each other. 😉
Video tutorial #4: How to chain piece Voyage quilt blocks.
In the past we have talked about how to chain piece quilt rows. For a full tutorial with video, check out this post, Chain Piecing Quilt Rows – Video Tutorial!
That same technique can be applied on a smaller scale when sewing our Voyage quilt blocks. The addition of the HRT does add a small quirk to the chaining, but this video will show you how to get past that.
Even though the Voyage pattern includes instructions for king, queen, twin, throw and baby quilt sizes as well as fabric requirements and instructions for a multi-colored version as well as this two-color quilt version, if you want the ultimate beginner quilt experience, I recommend starting small and simple. I'll repeat that.
Beginner Quilter Tip!
Start small and simple. Meaning – for the best beginner experience, so you can get your bearings and hone some important sewing skills, make a two-color quilt in the baby or throw size.
I know I know, you really want to surprise your mom with a queen quilt for her bed and you want to use 10 different fabrics. And yes, you can totally do it. I have confidence in you. BUT, that will be a very different experience than making a two-color baby quilt.
Seen here is a two-color throw quilt that's 60" x 72". The baby quilt is a really nice toddler size measuring 45" x 57".

I really like this pattern. I was not able to find the pattern for purchase in the shop, and the kits referenced needing to buy the pattern separately.
That’s right. The pattern will be available tomorrow, March 12! Yay!!
New quilter here and already losing sleep over triangles and points! Thank you for all the video tutorials. I will be devouring them while I wait for my fabric to arrive. So excited!
Thanks for the videos on HRT’s and chain piecing. Great time savers! Looking forward to making one (or five🤣) of this new pattern!
I LOVE this pattern, Suzy!! I’m going to start with the 2-color and if I can manage it, I’ll “graduate” to a multi-color Voyage throw. You have the greatest creativity!!
Thank you, Trish! This is such a sweet compliment! I hope you enjoy the voyage 🙂
Do you have a list of your favorite rulers / grids (on your blog or FB page)? The triangle one you used to trim your triangles in the video looks like a life saver! Thanks!
It is! I have a whole HST trimming tutorial on that ruler here. I also have a post on rulers in general – https://suzyquilts.com/best-quilting-rulers/
The binding color is great with the two colors! also love the backing. Can you share what you used for these? Thanks!
Of course! The binding is Michael Miller Cotton Couture solid Glass and the backing is a Liberty of London Tana lawn I got from Duckadilly called Poppy and Daisy Pastels.
Do you have a tutorial on how to do the straight rows you used to quilt the layers together?
